Appointment Details

  • Title: APL Associate Professor without Tenure
  • Appointment Criteria: Appointment to the rank of APL Associate Professor WOT requires a primary professional staff appointment in APL controlling the terms of employment.
  • Duration of Appointment: No term limits, this appointment will expire no later than the date the individual separates from the APL professional staff employment.
  • Eligible for Tenure: No
  • Voting Rights: Voting status determined at time of appointment
  • Eligible for Promotion: Yes, WOT faculty promotion timelines and procedures followed; however, faculty promotion increases do not apply to this appointment.
  • Competitive Recruitment Required: Yes
  • Additional Information: A copy of the joint agreement between the responsible administrative unit, APL and the appointing academic unit, and the signed memorandum of understanding that outlines the conditions of the appointment must be included in the appointment packet.

New Appointment Details

  • Documentation Required:
    • Offer letter (separate PDF)
    • Chair/director’s letter to dean/chancellor recommending appointment including:
      • Faculty vote
      • Rank and title
      • Start date
      • Service period (either 9 or 12 months)*
      • Monthly rate of pay*
      • Appointment (FTE) percent
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Memorandum of Understanding signed by responsible administrative unit, APL, and appointing dean and candidate
    • Curriculum vitae
    • Copy of online job advertisement from the Chronicle of Higher Education or appropriate print journal

Promotion Details

  • Promotion to the full professor level is not a function of time in rank nor length of service. Every faculty member below the rank of professor must be considered each year for possible promotion (Faculty Code Section 24-54).
  • Unsuccessful faculty promotion reviews will not affect the individual’s primary APL professional staff employment and may not be challenged.

Termination Details

  • Emeritus Eligibility: No
  • Irrespective of the general terms of a WOT professorial appointment, this WOT appointment will expire no later than the date the individual terminates from the APL professional staff employment (e.g. resignation or retirement).
