Additional Details

Chief Resident

Chief Resident (ACGME and non-ACGME)

  • Key considerations: Only current medical residents may be considered for chief resident appointments

Resident (ACGME and non-ACGME)

  • Key considerations: Those in this title may not hold resident and chief resident titles simultaneously

Fellow (ACGME)

  • Key considerations: Those in this title may not hold fellow and chief resident titles simultaneously (See the RFPU CBA for details)

Note: The RFPU is the official labor union for the majority of residents and fellows in the UW School of Medicine and UW School of Dentistry. More details about the contract and titles governed by it may be found on the UW Labor Relations site.

Currently, a limited number of senior fellow and senior fellow-trainee titles are being used. Senior fellows may be privileged as attending physicians within the context of their university responsibilities, enrolled in clinical residency and fellowship programs in the health sciences (non-ACGME), or are engaged in research related to their clinical training programs. Senior fellow-trainees have been awarded a fellowship or traineeship and are paid a stipend. To avoid confusion with titles governed by collective bargaining agreements at the University, there is an ongoing plan to phase out senior fellow and senior fellow-trainee titles. Please contact the GME Office or acadpers@uw.edu if you have questions.
