Position Description

The University of Washington School of Law is hiring for one Associate Law Librarian or Higher* (.5 FTE) with Head of Research and Instructional Services & Open Rank Teaching Professor (.5 FTE) for the Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library.

Position Summary: 

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of the Law Library, the Head of Research and Instructional Services (RIS) supervises the Law Library’s research team and ensures provision of excellent services to the UW Law community. In their faculty capacity (50%), the incumbent reports to the Academic Dean for professorial duties in the law school. The faculty appointment has a 9-month service period. It’s on a non-tenure track, with promotion eligibility. In their law librarian (Associate Law Librarian or Higher, with 12-month service period) capacity (50%), the incumbent reports to the Associate Director for law librarian duties, including leading the development and delivery of co-curricular courses as part of the Law Library’s experiential Technology, Research, and Ethics Initiative. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

·       Is a member of the Law Library’s management team and assists in day-to-day operations which includes key areas such as strategic planning, assessment, communication, personnel development, and technological needs.

·       Directs overall research and instructional services for the Law Library.

·       Oversees the work of RIS staff, interns, and law librarians.

·       Cultivates excellent instructional skills among all law librarians interested in teaching.

·       Ensures the provision of excellent research services for UW Law faculty, staff, and students and reference support for non-UW Law users.

·       Performs reference duties as required, including possible periodic evening and weekend shifts. 

·       Manages UW Law faculty requests for research, instruction, and training.

·       Responsibly manages the RI department’s budget.

·       Maintains statistics related to research, instruction, and scholarly services for various reporting requirements, such as the American Bar Association, IPEDS, and the Association of Research Libraries. 

·       Assists with selection, cancellation, and retention decisions regarding the Law Library collection, which includes both digital and print content.

·       Serves on relevant University, School of Law, Law Library, and professional committees as determined by their supervisor.

·       Develops and maintains documentation for primary job functions and participates in the maintenance of department and Law Library-wide documentation.

·       Contributes to the advancement of the legal information profession and legal profession through participation in scholarly and professional development activities locally, regionally, and nationally.

·       Performs other duties as assigned.

The base salary range for this position will be $89,544 - $110,000 plus benefits, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The preferred anticipated start date is July 1, 2024, and it's negotiable.

Qualifications

·       At least 2 years of professional experience working in law libraries, including a demonstrable history of supervisory duties or potential for rapid growth into supervisory duties.

·       Demonstrable history of curricular design and teaching.

·       MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution, or foreign equivalent

·      JD from an ABA-accredited law school, or foreign equivalent
