Health Sciences Library

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) is a national leader in the development and application of innovative strategies and technologies to meet information and research needs for the benefit of communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. The HSL supports the education, research, and clinical programs of the UW's six health sciences schools, the UW Medicine Accountable Care Network (ACN), and the wider interdisciplinary biomedical community of the University. The UW Medicine ACN spans 46 cities and neighborhoods and includes 1,000 primary care providers; 4,000 specialists; 1,000 clinics; 19 hospitals; 33 urgent care clinics; and 19 emergency departments.

School of Social Work

The School of Social Work (SSW) is a national and international leader (ranked #2 in the nation), focused on educating social work practitioners and educators, cutting-edge research, and public service to communities. The School of Social Work serves both undergraduate and graduate students, offering degrees that include BASW, MSW, and PhD, in addition to certificate programs. THE POSITION

The Social Work and Research Impact Librarian will join the Clinical Research & Data Services (CRDS) team in providing research and teaching support to the SSW and other HSL-supported schools and departments, particularly those listed below in Specific Responsibilities and Duties. This role will join CRDS in providing support to related research initiatives and schools, including UW Medicine and other associated centers and clinics.

The Social Work and Research Impact Librarian will cultivate productive relationships to integrate library resources, expertise, and services into the School of Social Work community's curriculum, research, and clinical operations. Given the rapidly changing landscape in scholarly communications and data sharing requirements, they will maintain knowledge of trends in scholarly communication and strategies for describing research impact, and will collaborate to provide relevant information and services to the School. They will develop and promote library services and resources; participate in professional and scholarly organizations and activities; pursue personal professional development; and maintain awareness of evolving trends in library and information science related to health sciences.

The Social Work and Research Impact Librarian will lead HSL’s efforts in the area of citation-based impact metrics and knowledge of the issues surrounding responsible research evaluation using bibliometric data. The candidate will also help SSW researchers map and benchmark the impact of their research.

This position is not tenure eligible. This position is represented by SEIU 925 – Libraries. Please see the SEIU 925 collective bargaining agreement for the Librarian promotion process.

This position is eligible for hybrid work.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

● Provide research support to and foster relationships with faculty, staff, students, and researchers in the School of Social Work, as well as other HSL-associated departments.

● Provide individual and group consultations and instruction on research strategies, searching, research data and information management, and tools for evidence-based practice.

● Provide consultations and guidance on strategies for expanding and documenting research impact and the use of citation-based metrics.

● Develop and maintain expert searching skills in order to conduct complex literature searches.

● Design and present instructional sessions both in-person and online.

● Monitor developments pertaining to scholarly communication in the health sciences. Represent HSL on UW Libraries committees relating to scholarly communications.

● Educate and collaborate with others in the Libraries and greater UW community to promote awareness and understanding of topics such as: author rights and responsibilities, open access initiatives, and federal funding agency requirements pertaining to publications and research data.

● Help maintain and develop collections to support current and future research, teaching, and learning needs of Social Work and associated departments.

● Develop LibGuides and other instructional materials.

● Perform professional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship and service. Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional growth.

● Provide liaison services to other departments and schools as requested.

RANK

Position will be at the rank of Assistant, or Senior Assistant Librarian, depending on qualifications and background. BENEFITS

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the UW Retirement Plan (UWRP) or the state’s Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment.  Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax. Appointees solely employed and paid directly by a non-UW entity are not UW employees and are not eligible for UW or Washington State employee benefits.

SALARY

The base salary range for this position will be $5,500-$7,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance. 

ANTICIPATED START DATE

While we hope to fill the position Summer 2024, we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore optimal timing.

Qualifications

Required

● Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

● Strong public service orientation with an aptitude for providing online and face-to-face instruction and consultation services.

● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

● Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and a more socially just society and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

Preferred (Please consider applying if you do not meet the preferred qualifications as we welcome librarians with varied experience.)

● Evidence of team-based work in an academic, research, public, or clinical setting.

● Experience using health sciences information resources to provide instruction and research support.

● Familiarity with interdisciplinary collaboration.

● Understanding of current issues surrounding scholarly communication, open access publishing, and data management.
