Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish people), the College of Education at The University of Washington, Seattle, seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor in the area of Multilingual Education, to positively impact the racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity of the educator workforce in the region to more authentically match the K-12 students we serve, and to prepare for the expansion of Washington’s Dual Language Education programs statewide. The position will carry the non-tenure rank of Assistant Teaching Professor and is a three-year, 9-month position at 100% FTE. Renewal of this appointment will be considered in the second year. The base salary range for this position will be $7,889 - $8,445/per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a relocation incentive and a limited commitment of summer salary based on curricular need.

 

The COE Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will provide high-quality Bilingual, World Languages, and English Language Learner (ELL) instruction to teacher candidates within five Teacher Education pathways and undergraduate studies. The successful candidate will also work with Teacher Education leadership to expand the number of outstanding, highly qualified bi/multilingually endorsed teachers with particular attention on recruiting candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or multilingual speakers.

Additionally, our future colleague will help us to identify ways to better serve applicants, students, and faculty while also following through on implementing changes and assessing subsequent progress. 

 

The Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will provide direct outreach to potential teacher candidates and will be responsible for cultivating relationships and working closely with tribal communities, organizations, and school districts that support individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or multilingual speakers. The Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will work in partnership with the COE Office of Student Services to contribute to College of Education diversity recruitment and retention strategies, and will coordinate efforts with UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) and the Office of Graduate Student Equity and Excellence (GSEE).

 

The Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will work In partnership with the Teacher Education Program (TEP) Directors and instructional teams (across five Teacher Education pathways) to ensure that teacher candidates seeking the Bilingual or ELL endorsements experience comprehensive preparation as multilingual educators both in coursework and in field placements. 

 

Responsibilities:

●      Provide high quality Multilingual instruction in undergraduate, graduate, and endorsement coursework.

●      Work with the TEP recruitment team and individual teacher education programs to plan, coordinate, promote, and recruit prospective Multilingual Education, Bilingual, and ELL teacher candidates

●      Assess current candidate recruitment and application processes to identify inequities and/or inaccessibility and to address barriers and strengthen recruitment and retention systems with particular attention on recruiting teacher education candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, multilingual speakers, and/or first generation college students;

●      Represent UW Seattle and the College of Education when interfacing with MLL Coalition, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Dual Language Steering Committee, and other related regional and statewide entities;

●      In coordination with program directors and Teacher Education personnel, take the lead in organizing, supporting and directly conducting application reviews and interviews for applicants seeking Bilingual and ELL endorsement;

●      Establish working relationships with school district partnerships such as the Academy for Rising Educators in Seattle Public Schools to facilitate certification and/or endorsement requirements for district employees (teachers of record and paraeducators), in conjunction with unions;  

●      With the TEP retention specialist and program leads, support teacher candidates after they are admitted to their respective MIT programs;

●      Expand evening Multilingual course offerings for in-service teachers; 

●      Coordinate expansion to a full-service Multilingual preparation program in all five Teacher Education pathways.

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent in a relevant field or discipline by the date of the appointment, such as, but not limited to, curriculum and instruction or education, to include an endorsement or university-level coursework in bilingual education and/or English as an additional language, and at least three years’ experience as a bilingual language teacher, ELL teacher, or teacher of Multilingual students in a K-12 school
