Position Description

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington (UW-Seattle) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, Assistant Teaching Professor, to start no earlier than Sept 2024. The initial appointment for this position spans three years, with the potential for renewal. This position is eligible for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. Teaching track positions at UW are not tenure-eligible.

 

Responsibilities of this position include instruction of large introductory-level lecture courses in general chemistry, training and managing of teaching assistants for those courses, and curriculum development.  Teaching faculty will also pursue scholarship in the area of chemistry education, which may include but is not limited to pedagogical innovation, development of new curricula or course materials, participation in educational research, and/or outreach. UW teaching faculty are also expected to participate in service at the department and/or university level.

Our goal is to identify, recruit, and support an educator and scholar who can join our team in educating the next generation of scientists.

 

The base salary range for this position will be $8,800-$10,400 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a doctorate, or foreign equivalent, in the chemical sciences or a related field by the date of appointment.

A complete application will include:

  • 200-word statement summarizing your experience and accomplishments teaching chemistry (e.g., type and level of courses taught, size of courses taught).
  • 200-word statement describing how your teaching will broaden access and inclusion in chemistry courses.
  • A current CV detailing your education, teaching experiences, research background, and service.
  • A teaching statement: including, but not limited to, teaching experiences, teaching approach/philosophy, teaching strategies (especially relating to general chemistry and/or large class sizes), (~2 pages).
  • A diversity statement discussing your experiences supporting diverse identities in your classroom, and how those experiences will shape your approaches to teaching UW’s diverse undergraduate population, (~1 page).
  • A 5-7 min video sample of your teaching, submitted via a publicly available link.
  • Three letters of recommendation submitted through Interfolio by the writer.
