Appointment Details


  • Title: Lecturer Part-Time (formerly Lecturer, Part-time, Competitive Recruitment)
  • Service Period: 9 or 12 months
  • Limitations on Appointment: Lecturer is an instructional title that may be conferred on persons who have special instructional roles (Faculty Code Section 24-34 B).
  • Length of Appointment: May be on an annual or multiple year (1-5 years) part-time basis (minimum 50%). Part-time appointment as lecturer is for the period stated in the letter of appointment. (Faculty Code Section 24-41 B).
  • Eligible for tenure: No
  • Voting Rights: No
  • Salary Requirements: Must meet University minimum

New Appointment Details


  • Education requirements are determined at the local level.
  • A faculty vote is required for appointment. The department faculty, by a majority vote, may delegate to an elected committee of its voting faculty the authority to recommend annual or quarterly appointments without a full faculty vote.  Multiple year appointments require a full faculty vote (Faculty Code Section 24-52 C).

Reappointment Details


  • Renewable appointment – A faculty vote is required for reappointment. The department faculty, by a majority vote, may delegate to an elected committee of its voting faculty the authority to recommend renewal of annual or quarterly appointments without a full faculty vote. Multiple year appointments may not be delegated to an elected committee (Faculty Code Section 24-53 A).

Termination Details


  • Emeritus Eligibility: Not eligible
  • A faculty member has a professional obligation to give a written notice of resignation at the earliest possible opportunity. Normally such resignations should be given at least three months prior to the termination date, or within 15 days of notification of terms of a reappointment, whichever occurs later, and should ordinarily become effective at the end of an academic year (Faculty Code Section 24-56 A).
  • The unit should attempt to obtain such a letter (see Faculty Code Section 24-56 B for additional guidance).
  • A letter accepting the resignation should be returned to the faculty member.
