The initial appointment of an Assistant Professor is typically for a period of three years. Renewal for a second three‑year term will be considered by the department and school/college/campus during spring quarter of the second year. A mandatory review for tenure and promotion must be conducted in the sixth year of appointment (although it may be recommended earlier), [unless hired on a part‑time basis].

Because the rules of the University preclude the use of the Assistant Professor title when the prospective faculty member is in the process of completing a doctorate, the department has recommended this appointment at the Acting Assistant Professor rank until you have completed your degree. Upon certification of degree completion, the department intends to recommend the change of your appointment to Assistant Professor. At such time the acting appointment will conclude, and an initial three‑year Assistant Professor appointment will begin. This is, of course, contingent upon your timely completion of the degree.

Faculty Welcome Week

We are pleased to welcome you to the University of Washington. To support your successful transition and first year, you are strongly encouraged to attend Faculty Welcome Week, scheduled for September 8–11, 2026. Faculty Welcome Week includes Teaching@UW and New Faculty Onboarding sessions designed to connect you with colleagues across the University, introduce you to essential resources, and provide practical tools to support teaching, research, and service at UW.

Program highlights include:

  • September 9 and 10 – Teaching@UW, hosted by the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • September 10 and 11 – New Faculty Onboarding, hosted by Academic Personnel & Faculty

As part of this two‑day onboarding experience, co‑hosted by the Office for Academic Personnel & Faculty and five central offices—the Office of Research, CoMotion, the Office of Global Affairs, UW Libraries, and UWHR—you will receive:

  • A virtual overview of key campus services and faculty resources
  • In‑person panel discussions, networking opportunities, and cross‑disciplinary engagement
  • Guidance on navigating research infrastructure, teaching support, and building a scholarly portfolio

This onboarding experience is designed to help new faculty confidently begin their academic journey at the University of Washington. Additional details and registration information are available at New Faculty@UW.

Accepting This Offer

Before your appointment recommendation can be acted upon formally, we must receive your written concurrence with the proposed terms of appointment as specified above. Please provide this as soon as possible. Once you have obtained access to University computing systems you will be expected to complete some information in Workday, such as Affirmative Action data and W-4 withholding. A condition of this appointment is that you resign any faculty appointment or other employment which you are holding elsewhere by the effective date of your University of Washington appointment.
