Appointment Details

  • Title: Visiting Scientist
  • Service Period: 1-12 months
  • Limitations on Appointment: Visiting scientists are typically non-academic experts or professionals in a field who collaborate with or serve an academic department for a temporary period. They engage in independent (non-mentored) research, observation, and/or consultation with colleagues, and may not teach or be an instructor of record for any course. Individuals appointed to this title must not otherwise meet eligibility criteria for appointment as a postdoctoral scholar.
  • May not be a student enrolled at any institution and/or performing the duties of a professional staff research scientist.
  • Length of Appointment Term: Initial period of appointment up to 1 year with option to renew for a second and final year.
  • Eligible for tenure: N/A
  • Voting Rights: N/A
  • Salary Requirements: Must meet University minimum (which is subject to change based on state and/or federal laws) whether paid by the University or by home employer (PDR). If a PDR, the home employer must be paying 100% of the salary and submit an official signed writing prior to the start date (to be entered into Workday) certifying the specific amount being paid and the commitment to pay at least the University minimum (in U.S. dollars), throughout the duration of the appointment.
  • Full-time/part-time: Must be full-time, unless a partial leave of absence is approved in advance by OAP
  • Promotable: No
  • Search Required: No

Reappointment Details

  • May be reappointed; not to exceed a total of 2 years of service

Termination Details

  • Emeritus Eligibility: No
  • If the person leaves prior to the end of their appointment, a resignation letter should be provided
  • May be terminated with 30 days’ notice, with or without cause
