Acting Instructor

Appointment Details

  • Title: Acting Instructor
  • Service Period: 9 or 12 months
  • Length of Appointment: Annual appointment. Limited to 4 years in any one acting title. 6 years total combined acting titles.
  • Eligible for Tenure: No
  • Voting Rights: No
  • Salary Requirements:
    • Must meet University minimum. Acting Instructors whose primary duties do not include teaching must meet minimum FLSA salary requirements.
  • Full-time/Part-time: Both. If primary duties do not include teaching, must have a full-time appointment. The percentage of appointment must be clearly documented at the time of hire.
  • Promotable: No
  • Competitive Recruitment Required: No
  • Educational Requirements: Must have terminal degree.

New Appointment Details

  • Documentation Required:
    • Offer letter (separate PDF)
    • Chair/director’s letter to dean/chancellor recommending appointment including:
      • Faculty vote
      • Rank and title
      • Start date
      • Service period (either 9 or 12 months)*
      • Monthly rate of pay*
      • Appointment (FTE) percent
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Curriculum vitae

Promotion Details

  • Not a promotable title.

Reappointment Details

  • The reappointment decision must be made each year, six months (or in the case of an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appropriate expiration date.
  • Acting appointments are for one year or less, limited to 4 years in any one rank, or 6 years maximum in combination of acting titles.
  • Documentation required is a single PDF including correspondence from the chair/director to the faculty member indicating the reappointment decision including faculty member’s name, title, and term of the appointment as well as the faculty member’s acceptance of the reappointment.

Termination Details

  • Emeritus Eligibility: No
  • A faculty member has a professional obligation to give a written notice of resignation at the earliest possible opportunity. Normally such resignations should be given at least three months prior to the termination date, or within 15 days of notification of terms of a reappointment, whichever occurs later, and should ordinarily become effective at the end of an academic year (Faculty Code Section 24-56A).
  • The unit should attempt to obtain such a letter with a statement from the faculty member indicating the name and address of next employer.
