Appointment Details

  • Title: Acting Assistant Professor (formerly Acting Assistant Professor, Temporary)
  • Service Period: 9 or 12 months
  • Limitations on Appointment: Appointment with the rank of assistant professor requires a demonstration of teaching and research ability and requires completion of professional training.
  • Duration of Appointment: Annual appointment. Limited to 4 years in any one acting title. 6 years total combined acting titles.
  • Eligible for Tenure: No
  • Voting Rights: No
  • Salary Requirements: Must meet University minimum
  • Full-time/Part-time: Both. The percentage of appointment must be clearly documented at the time of hire.
  • Promotable: No
  • Competitive Recruitment Required: A competitive recruitment will be required in order to transition into the assistant professor title.
  • Educational Requirements: Must have a terminal degree.

    • Chair/director’s letter to dean/chancellor recommending appointment including:
      • Faculty vote
      • Rank and title
      • Start date
      • Service period (either 9 or 12 months)*
      • Monthly rate of pay*
      • Appointment (FTE) percent
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Curriculum vitae
    • Title Change Request Form (only if transferring from postdoctoral scholar title)
    • If applicable, copy of online job advertisement from the Chronicle of Higher Education or appropriate print journal

Termination Details

  • Emeritus Eligibility: No
  • A faculty member has a professional obligation to give a written notice of resignation at the earliest possible opportunity. Normally such resignations should be given at least three months prior to the termination date, or within 15 days of notification of terms of a reappointment, whichever occurs later, and should ordinarily become effective at the end of an academic year (Faculty Code Section 24-56A).
  • The unit should attempt to obtain such a letter with a statement from the faculty member indicating the name and address of next employer.
