Residents and fellows

Resident and fellow titles are limited to health science units at the University of Washington (e.g., School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine). This category of academic personnel is distinct from faculty, librarians, postdoctoral scholars, and academic staff (APS 40.1).

  • Reappointment considerations: Maximum of 3 years in title regardless of funding source or salary plan. While it is expected reappointment will be on an annual basis, reappointment to a term of less than 12 months is possible if there is insufficient funding to support a full-year reappointment, the project/program is scheduled to end in less than 12 months, reappointment is limited by visa sponsorship limitations, and/or time in title has been exhausted. In such circumstances, the limited reappointment is planned (not modified after the fact); the associated reappointment letter shall clearly state the end date, provide notification of nonrenewal, and be issued at least 60 days prior to the anticipated end date of employment.

Reappointment considerations: Maximum of 3 years in title regardless of funding source or salary plan. While it is expected reappointment will be on an annual basis, reappointment of less than 12 months is possible if there is insufficient funding to support a full-year reappointment, the project/program is scheduled to end in less than 12 months, reappointment is limited by visa sponsorship limitations, and/or time in title has been exhausted. Salary considerations: Individuals in this title are paid a stipend. If the individual plans to engage in work beyond the scope of the training grant, a Fellow Non-ACGME position must be added with FTE not to exceed 25%. The salary on the new position would serve as compensation for the additional work.
