Appointment Details

  • Title: Interim postdoctoral scholar
  • Limitations on Appointment: Applies when the postdoctoral scholar is a former UW doctoral student who recently obtained their PhD degree or equivalent and who requests this title for a short-term appointment to complete an existing project from their graduate educational programs before moving on to other employment. Interim postdoctoral scholars are engaged in full-time mentored advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence, and perform primarily research and scholarship under the direction and supervision of University faculty mentors. 
  • Length of appointment: Up to 6 months
  • Service period: 12 months 
  • Eligible for Tenure: No
  • Voting Rights: No
  • Salary Requirements: Must meet minimum requirements for postdoctoral scholars, as specifically outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Full-time/part-time: Full-time

  • Additional Information: Individuals in interim postdoctoral scholar titles may not be: i) privileged as attending physicians within the context of their University responsibilities; ii) enrolled in clinical residency and fellowship programs in the health sciences; iii) engaged in research related to their clinical training program; or iv) employed and paid directly by non-University entities (e.g., individuals paid directly by Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Veterans Administration, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and the U.S. Military).     • Educational/Experience Requirements: Doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) must be conferred by the appointment start date or must have otherwise met all degree requirements.

  • Proof of degree: Must include a copy of degree, an official UW transcript, or a formal statement from the UW registrar or graduate school stating all degree requirements have been met,  if degree has not yet been conferred.

Reappointment Details

  • Must be provided with notice of reappointment as soon as practicable, but no less than 30 calendar days prior to the start of reappointment.
  • While interim postdoctoral scholars may be appointed more than once to the interim postdoctoral scholar title, no one shall be appointed as an interim postdoctoral scholar for more than a cumulative total of 6 months in one or multiple appointments. Should an interim postdoctoral scholar be appointed as a postdoctoral scholar or postdoctoral scholar-fellow at the conclusion of the interim appointment, their hire date shall remain the original date of appointment into the interim title. Time spent working in this classification counts towards the 5 year maximum eligibility criteria for postdoctoral scholars.
