Faculty Salary and Tenure: Key Definitions and Terms
Salary Components
- Base Salary (Base Rate, in Workday): This is the total salary from all sources (A+B) for full-time effort (100% full-time equivalent, or FTE). The base salary is used when allocating fractional effort to grants and contracts.
- Paid Salary (Base Pay, in Workday): This is the actual salary paid to a faculty member in a given pay period. Paid salary is reduced from the base salary when the B-component is not funded and/or a faculty member takes (partial) leave. Paid salary is the salary on which retirement contribution calculations are based.
- A-Component Salary (Tenure-Backed): The A component of an A/B salary is the state-committed salary support associated with tenure, matched with an institutional expectation of teaching, research, and service contributions. This is the protected salary for tenured faculty members referred to in Faculty Code 25-31.
- B-Component Salary (Not Tenure-Backed): The B component of an A/B salary is the balance of the base salary funded from non-state appropriated sources, matched with an institutional expectation of teaching, research, and service contributions. The B component is contingent on the faculty member’s ability to generate funding from non-state sources.
Tenure-Related Terms
- Partial Tenure: A faculty member with the title of Associate Professor or Professor who only has a portion of their appointment backed by the protections of Faculty Code 25-31 is said to have partial tenure. They may hold this appointment indefinitely, either upon hire or retention, or if a faculty member permanently reduces their roster percent to become a part-time employee.
Salary Ratios and Funding
- A/B Ratio: The A/B ratio refers to the proportion of state-backed (A-Component) to non-state-backed (B-Component) salary associated with a faculty member’s appointment. This ratio must be between 90/10 and 70/30 for a retention action, and it should be specified in the hiring plan for new hires in the professorial track.
- Applicable Sources: The B-component salary must be funded from sources other than the state-supported general operating fund, such as grants, contracts, clinical revenue, etc., provided these sources approve their use for this purpose.
Modifying A/B Ratio
An A/B salary structure, whether upon initial hire into a partial-tenure position or as a result of a retention, is irrevocable by the faculty member.
Decreasing the A fraction of a salary, which is coincident with a decrease in tenure value, may only occur as part of an A/B retention, following the guidelines in the A/B Salary Policy for Faculty Retention. In general, raises should be applied in an equal percentage to the A and B components, keeping the A/B ratio constant.
The university is under no obligation to increase the A/B ratio at any time. Under extraordinary circumstances, an increase in tenure value for a faculty member hired with partial tenure may be requested as part of the annual hiring plan and must have provost approval.
