Letter of Solicitation

The letter of solicitation is essential in conveying that the unit is considering the candidate for potential promotion/tenure and is requesting the following information:

Duration and Nature of Acquaintance

The reviewer should describe the duration and nature of their acquaintance with the candidate.

Evaluation of Research, Scholarship, or Creative Endeavors

The letter should include an evaluation of the candidate’s research, scholarship, or creative endeavors, focusing on:

  • The significance, independence, influence, and promise of the candidate’s work, particularly since joining the University of Washington.
  • The candidate’s level of recognition, both nationally and internationally.

Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness

An assessment of the candidate’s teaching effectiveness should be provided, covering aspects such as:

  • Curriculum development
  • Student guidance

Contributions to University and field-related service and leadership, in alignment with the candidate’s rank and position

Comparison to Peers

The letter should include a comparison of the candidate’s achievements with those of prominent scholars or artists at a similar career stage within the same or related fields.

  • Your perspective on their service to the university and profession, administrative and leadership responsibilities are also welcome for our deliberations. 

Beginning in January 2025, faculty across the University of Washington experienced significant disruption to their federally funded research activities. Although the impacts of these disruptions are still evolving – and new disruptions to research are emerging – we ask that you consider this unprecedented time when evaluating research contributions since 2025, including the written components of this promotion packet.

Teaching track faculty at the University of Washington are required to engage in scholarship and may choose to demonstrate this through publication.
