Adding Adjunct or Joint Appointments
Faculty members who obtain an adjunct or joint appointment must seek support for the appointment from their primary unit Chair/Director and go through an appointment process that follows unit guidelines as well as criteria set forth in the Faculty Code.
An adjunct appointment is made only to a faculty member already holding a primary appointment in another unit. This title recognizes the contributions of a member of the faculty to a secondary unit. Adjunct appointments do not confer governance or voting privileges or eligibility for tenure in the secondary unit. These appointments are annual; the question of their renewal shall be considered each year by the faculty of the secondary unit. At such time that the primary appointment may be considered for promotion the adjunct chair/director must provide a recommendation. To add an adjuct, the appointment packet should be approved by the unit prior to entry into OPUS.
A joint appointment recognizes a faculty member’s long-term commitment to, and participation in, two or more units. A joint appointment may be discontinued only with the concurrence of the faculty member and the appointing units. One unit shall be designated the primary unit and the others secondary, and this designation can be changed only with the concurrence of the faculty member and the appointing units. Personnel determinations (salaries, promotions, leave, etc.) originate with the primary unit, but may be proposed by the secondary unit(s), and all actions must have the concurrence of the secondary unit(s). Email approval from AHR is required for adding a joint appointment. Please paste the approval into the notes section of the PERM.
At the time of appointment to the joint unit it should be determined whether voting rights, and/or tenure will be conferred. This condition must be stated in the appointment documentation.
Dropping Adjunct or Joint Appointments
Joint and Adjunct appointments are reviewed annually for renewal. When a faculty member’s appointment is not renewed they will be notified by the unit or Dean/Chancellor’s Office and the appointment will be ended. Please send notice of non-renewal to AHR and end the appointment in OPUS.
If a faculty member wishes to resign their joint or adjunct appointment, they should notify the appointing unit with a resignation letter. Please forward the resignation letter to AHR.
Partial Reduction of Appointment
Faculty members may request to reduce the percentage of their appointment on a permanent basis to no lower than 50%. As long as the overall appointment does not reduce to below 50%, benefits can be maintained. For example, a 100% faculty member on a nine-month basis may choose to work only two of three quarters, and, thereby, resign one-third of his or her appointment. Alternatively, a faculty member may choose to resign a percentage of time all year, thus becoming partially employed across the year. Decisions about a reduced teaching load and other assignments are determined at the unit level. While they are on reduced appointments, faculty will continue as voting members of their units in the quarters in which they are salaried.
There are a number of legitimate reasons a faculty member may choose to reduce his or her appointment. By retaining 50% percent or more of an appointment for at least six consecutive months during an academic year, the faculty member retains the University contribution toward benefit programs during the employment months. A faculty member who retains his or her appointment at 50% or more for six consecutive months would be eligible to receive the University’s contribution toward medical payments for those six months, and only need go on self-pay for the six months he or she is not on payroll. Alternatively, if a faculty member reduces his or her appointment to 50% for three or four quarters (depending on if their appointment is on a nine-or twelve-month basis), the state contribution to benefits would continue throughout the calendar year.
