Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSCI) and the Health Systems Research (HSR) Center of Innovation (COIN) at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System are jointly recruiting a full-time (100% FTE) VA Core Investigator and university faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding in the faculty-scientist pathway. 

The position will be based at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) in Seattle. The intended length of appointment for this position is indefinite. This position is contingent on available funding. The successful applicant is expected to support themselves 100% though existing grants, such as a VA Career Development Award or NIH K award.

Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The anticipated start date for this faculty appointment is Winter 2024/Spring 2025.

Job Duties

Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is the third largest clinical department within the UW School of Medicine, with over 300 full-time faculty, over 400 courtesy/affiliate faculty, 132 trainees, over 300 staff, and an annual budget of over $110 million. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. The psychiatry residency training program is the largest program in the United States and, as the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, our education program runs numerous workforce training programs for mental health practitioners across Washington State and the Pacific Northwest Region.

The Department’s robust research portfolio reached $55 million in grant and contract awards in Fiscal Year 2023 for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, Psychosis, and Trauma. The Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.

Seattle-Denver Center of Innovation (COIN)

The COIN is a nationally-renowned health services research program located jointly in Seattle and Denver with an extensive portfolio of more than 100 research projects led by 35 core investigators, an annual budget of $20 million, and a training program for both MD and PhD postdoctoral researchers. The COIN’s objective is to conduct research to improve the delivery of health services to Veterans. The Division of Population Health, in the UW Department of Psychiatry has 25 investigators, a portfolio of 15 projects, an annual budget of $10 million, as well as and an NIMH funded T32 Fellowship Program for clinician scientists. The Division of Population health is dedicated to improving the health of the public by developing, testing, evaluating, and implementing effective behavioral health interventions across the entire spectrum of health care delivery.

Salary

This position is paid directly by the VA and receives no UW compensation. Please refer to the VA for information about compensation for this position.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

A PhD in Public Health (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field.
