Position Description

The University of Washington School of Law is hiring for one Associate Law Librarian or higher (.5 FTE) with Associate Director role of Law Library & Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching, or Teaching Professor (.5 FTE) for the Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library.

 

Position Summary: Under the leadership of the Information Dean of Information and Technology (Information Dean), the Associate Director is responsible for the daily operations of the Law Library. This position supervises the Law Library’s department heads, providing strategic and administrative guidance related to personnel, collections, users, programming, services, and the Law Library facility. The Associate Director assists the Information Dean with budgeting, hiring, and strategic planning for the future growth and development of the Law Library. This position assumes overall responsibility for the Law Library in the absence of the Information Dean. In their faculty capacity (50%), the incumbent reports to the Academic Dean for professorial duties in the law school. The faculty appointment has a 9-month service period. It’s on a non-tenure track, with promotion eligibility. In their law librarian (Associate Law Librarian or Higher, with 12-month service period) capacity (50%), the incumbent reports to the Information Dean for law librarian duties. 

 

Job Responsibilities: 

·       Assists the Information Dean in short and long-term Law Library planning, including budget, collection, and policy development.

·       Maintains close working relationships with the administration, faculty, staff, and students of the UW Law community to understand their evolving and diverse research and curricular needs.

·       Provides comprehensive management and leadership for new system-wide initiatives and programs.

·       Coordinates the collection of statistics to ensure compliance with various reporting requirements, such as the American Bar Association, IPEDS, and the Association of Research Libraries. Prepares requested annual reports for the Law Library and School of Law.

·       Works closely with the Head of RIS, interns, and supervisory Law Library staff to ensure interns receive the training and mentorship necessary to successfully support the scholarly needs of the UW Law community.

·       Serves on relevant University, School of Law, Law Library, and professional committees as determined by the Information Dean of Information and Technology. May represent the Information Dean at meetings or events.

·       Delegates, directs, and promotes Law Library activities for supporting UW Law community, evaluates effectiveness of these services, and implements beneficial changes.

·       Works with UW Law HR to coordinate Law Library personnel activities (hiring, procedures, documentation, etc.) to ensure compliance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements governing Law Library employees.

·       At the discretion of the Dean of the Law School and the Information Dean, may serve as UW Law representative in discussions with labor relations and union representatives regarding Law Library matters.

·       Leads Law Library efforts to ensure services and policies conform to the UW Law Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan.

·       Oversees operational aspects of Law Librarian promotion cycles, such as advising applicants on the materials needed and organizing Law Librarian review of applicant’s promotion materials.

·       In consultation with the Information Dean, implements, reviews, and equitably enforces user behavioral policies and manages security and emergency procedures.

·       Oversees administration of Law Library facilities and equipment to ensure the needs of staff and law library users are reasonably met.

·       Contributes to the advancement of the legal information profession and legal profession through participation in scholarly and professional development activities locally, regionally, and nationally.

·       Performs reference duties as required, possibly including evening and weekend reference shifts.

·       Develops and maintains documentation for primary job functions and participates in the maintenance of department and Law Library-wide documentation.

·       Performs other duties as assigned.

The base salary range for this position will be $89,544 - $125,000 plus benefits, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The preferred anticipated start date is July 1, 2024, and it's negotiable.

Qualifications

·       At least 3 years of professional experience working in law libraries, including a demonstrable history of supervisory duties or potential for rapid growth into supervisory duties.

·       Demonstrable history of curricular design and teaching.

·       MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution, or foreign equivalent

·       JD from an ABA-accredited law school, or foreign equivalent
