Instructional Responsibility Policy
One of the University of Washington’s highest priorities is to provide superior instruction to all students. Units, colleges, schools and campuses are responsible for ensuring that courses are scheduled across the year in patterns that maximize student access.
Faculty members who are fully funded from instructional budgets are expected to be in residence (except when on approved leave) and will be assigned classroom instructional responsibilities. Faculty members who are partially supported from instructional funds will have proportional instructional responsibilities.
Some schools, colleges or departments may release a faculty member from instructional responsibility in a particular quarter to fulfill other University responsibilities. Each such arrangement must be requested in advance by the department chair, campus dean or program director and approved by the dean or chancellor.
Units, colleges, schools and campuses will report annually to the provost on how courses and instruction are distributed across the academic year and among the faculty.
