Position Description
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine is seeking applications for our Proton Radiation Therapy Fellowship Program. Fellows in this 1-year program will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of proton radiation therapy including comprehensive clinical and technical proton therapy experience in the treatment of pediatric and adult patients across the full range of disease sites.
Clinical rotations will involve working with UW Medicine faculty at the University of Washington Medical Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) South Lake Union, FHCC Proton Therapy Center, and Seattle Children’s Hospital to ensure continuity of care across sites. The fellowship’s curriculum encompasses work with pediatric and adult populations across multiple practice sites and is adaptable to meet candidate’s varying clinical and research interests.
Research rotations are customized to the fellow’s interests and include opportunities in clinical, physics, radiobiology, imaging, and health services research programs within the FHCC Proton Therapy Center, University of Washington, and FHCC.
The selected candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington as an Acting Instructor – Provisional with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2023. Acting Instructor - Provisionals hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
Department Overview:
The FHCC Proton Therapy Center is located on the 30-acre Northwest Campus of UW Medicine with 4 treatment rooms with the capability to deliver both uniform and pencil-beam scanning. Chemotherapy and conventional radiation therapy facilities are available in the immediate vicinity, providing comprehensive care to proton therapy patients. Overall, the UW Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients per year in multimodality programs and with strong emphasis on tumor imaging, using advanced stereotactic image-guided modalities, as well as IMRT, IGRT, 3D conformal radiation therapy, proton and neutron radiation, IORT and LDR/HDR brachytherapy. Other radiation therapy delivery systems include 7 linear accelerators, IGRT-capability, and Perfexion Gamma Knife. The department has direct access to PET/CT (with novel tracers), SPECT/CT, and MRI that are integrated in the planning process. Planning/IT systems include CMS, MIM, and RayStation.

Beyond the mountains to the west, there is the Pacific Ocean and, to the east, deserts, fruit, and wine country. Seattle is one of the fastest-growing cities with significant industries in biotechnology, computer technology and communication, global health, and e-commerce. The variety of neighborhoods within Seattle and surrounding areas offer a diversity of environments for families and single adults to call home, connected by bike commuting trails and a rapidly growing public transportation system.
NOTE: This position may require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) facility. FHCC requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at a FHCC facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the FHCC policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment.
The base salary range for this position will be: $6,250 - $7,084 per month ($75,000 - $85,008 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have an MD or a DO, or foreign equivalent, and be board certified or eligible in Radiation Oncology with the American Board of Radiology (ABR); candidates who are ABR board eligible must become board certified within two years of faculty appointment.
In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
