UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Certificate in GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS, specifically for the Principles of Cartography and Thematic Design course which is taught in autumn quarter, and in a classroom setting on the UW Seattle Campus. Two sections of the GIS certificate program, online and in-person, are being offered in the 2022-23 academic year and the instructional team is being expanded. Instructors serve a key role in certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as subject matter experts, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. PCE students consistently say that the instructor is the single most important element of their course. 

Professional and Continuing Education Instructors... 

  • Teach to a set curriculum plan with clear learning outcomes and competencies – these will align with the Online section for this course and in collaboration with those instructors 

  • Prepare a course syllabus in advance of the course start date (templates provided) 

  • Ensure that lesson plans and presentation materials for the full course are relevant and current 

  • Teach all class sessions at the scheduled time and in association with a second instructor for this course 

  • Respond to student inquiries and provide feedback on student assignments in a timely manner  

  • Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity across courses 

  • Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback from students and the Program Manager, and implement sound pedagogical practices 

  • Complete instructor onboarding, relevant learning technology training, and other training as needed 

  • Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies. 

  • Participate in 1-2 instructor meetings and information sessions per year 

The instructor for Principles of Cartography and Thematic Design will provide 3 hours of teaching in-person per week (course class time, Wednesday evening), plus preparation time, and provision of student assessment and feedback. Preparation time includes readiness to use UW online platforms and learning technologies as needed. An approximate average of 6 hours total per week is expected for preparation and teaching activities. Additional time will be needed for student communications, team meetings and program staff consultations. 

PCE courses are generally 10 weeks in duration and align with the UW academic quarter calendar.  Information on the Professional and Continuing Education Certificate in GIS may be found at

UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. This is a part-time, temporary position. 


  • A Bachelor’s degree in earth science, geography, environmental, or social sciences 

  • Teaching experience  

  • 5 years of Cartography experience using Esri products, and must be well versed in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online 

  • Experience creating mapping solutions that include but are not limited to dot density, choropleth, proportional symbols, flow mapping, cartograms, surfaces, typography, and 3D visualizations 

  • Familiar with and able to troubleshoot coordinate system and projection issues 

  • Knowledge of advanced cartographic principles and methods in different information product types (paper maps, web maps, etc.) understanding the capabilities and limitations of symbol/media choices 

  • Firm understanding of color theory, figure-ground principles, typography, and mapping evaluation 

  • Ability to supervise and train students on day-to-day software workflows 

  • Good IT skills including data organization and management, and troubleshooting capabilities 

  • Be up to date with emerging cartographic software, techniques, and methodologies 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally, in writing and in presentations 


  • Prior teaching experience with adult learners, and some in an online environment 

  • Prior teaching experience in the field of cartography and GIS applications 

  • Knowledge of other Esri compatible software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe for Maps addin, Leaflet, Mapbox
