The Alvord Brain Tumor Center (ABTC) is a multi-disciplinary program within the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center that includes clinical providers from radiation oncology, neuro oncology, medical oncology, and neurological surgery. Cancer care is given throughout University of Washington (UW) Medicine, including the UW Medical Center at Montlake Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at South Lake Union, Harborview Medical Center, and the Proton Center at Northwest Hospital. The ABTC provides a “medical home” for a diverse group of patients with brain and spinal cord tumors and is staffed by specialized neurologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons and advanced practice providers (APP).

This is a teaching associate position based in the Department of Radiation Oncology. The ABTC APP will primarily work in collaboration with Radiation Oncology physicians, but also contribute to the comprehensive interdisciplinary team including neuro-oncology and neurosurgery care at the ABTC. The ABTC APP will have the opportunity to advance their area of expertise to encompass other brain tumor disciplines.  The APP is a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team that includes other APPs, attending physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and social workers to care for a cohort of patients across the continuum of brain tumor diagnosis.  Members of the team are flexible and demonstrate a can-do attitude.  The successful applicant will be responsible for providing services independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing health physical assessment and examination, acute and chronic medical management of complications and symptoms associated with patient’s brain tumor treatment with a focus on radiation treatment, and active imaging surveillance of patients previously treated with radiation.   The successful candidate will have training and experience in Radiation Oncology, Neuro-Oncology, Medical Oncology, or Neurosurgery.

The selected candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington as Teaching Associate with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Expected work hours are likely Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

NOTE: This position may require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) facility. FHCC requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at a FHCC facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the FHCC policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment.

Qualifications

  • Current valid Washington State license as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C).
  • If ARNP, current Washington State license to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Nationally certified ARNP/PA-C.
  • Active DEA license.
  • Experience working with high-risk patients and clinical teaching experience.
  • Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary, collaborative team environment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in patient care.
  • Training and/or experience in the provision of outpatient care including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of patients.
  • ACLS Certification.
