UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Certificate in Wetland Science & Management, specifically for the Wetland Science & Ecological Processes course which is taught in autumn quarter, and in association with another instructor. Instructors serve a key role in certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as subject matter experts, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. PCE students consistently say that the instructor is the single most important element of their course.
Professional and Continuing Education Instructors...
- Teach to a set curriculum plan with clear learning outcomes and competencies
- Prepare a course syllabus in advance of the course start date (templates provided)
- Ensure that lesson plans and presentation materials for the full course are relevant and current
- Teach all class sessions at the scheduled time
- Respond to student inquiries and provide feedback on student assignments in a timely manner
- Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity across courses
- Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback from students and the Program Manager, and implement sound pedagogical practices
- Complete instructor onboarding, relevant learning technology training, and other training as needed
- Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies.
- Participate in 1-2 instructor meetings and information sessions per year
The instructor for Wetland Science & Ecological Processes will provide 3-6 hours of teaching per week (course class time; Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6-9 pm), plus preparation time, and provision of student assessment and feedback. The two instructors for this course co-teach for some sessions and teach either Tuesday or Thursday evenings for some weeks. Preparation time includes readiness to use UW online platforms and learning technologies as needed. An approximate average of 6 hours total per week is expected for preparation and teaching activities. Additional time will be needed for student communications, team meetings and program staff consultations.

UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. This is a part-time, temporary position.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Biology, Environmental Management, Wetland Studies, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a relevant discipline of environmental sciences and resource management that demonstrates an expert, applied level of knowledge in wetland science and management
- A comprehensive understanding of basic wetland science, including ecological and geomorphic processes, and wetland management principles, and ability to communicate these in a clear manner
- Working knowledge of the standard methodology for wetland functional assessments and familiarity with relevant online tools
- Current knowledge of emergent issues in wetland science and ecological processes, including policy and regulations related to wetlands in WA state
- Prior teaching experience
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability, and desire, to successfully work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Willingness to teach with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse adult students
- Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A graduate degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Biology, Environmental Management, Wetland Studies, or a related field
- Experience teaching wetland science and management topics listed above to undergraduate students or professional learners
- Experience teaching/presenting in an online environment as well as in the classroom and field
