Position Description

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington is looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated postdoctoral scholars to work on multidisciplinary projects sponsored by the DOE-funded Center for the Science of Synthesis Across Scales. Successful candidates will be supervised by Prof. Baneyx. They will conduct collaborative research on protein-based hybrid and hierarchical materials with an emphasis on dynamic reconfiguration and new functions, properties, and/or morphologies. Ideal candidates will be creative and passionate individuals with hands-on experience in molecular biology, protein engineering, protein expression in bacterial systems, protein purification and protein characterization. Experience with microscopy (optical, fluorescence, confocal, Raman), AFM/SPM, SEM/TEM and other characterization techniques at the bio-nano interface (SPR, QCM, XPS, XRD, SFG, etc) a plus.     

This position is offered for 1 year (12 months). Renewability will depend on job performance and funding availability.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be conducting research on protein-based hybrid and hierarchical materials. Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
  2. Participating and contributing to regular lab meetings and center-level meetings
  3. Writing and publishing results in scientific journals
  4. Presenting research results to peers and at conferences
  5. Participating in professional development activities, including DEIA efforts

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field.
  • Experience in molecular biology, protein engineering, protein expression, protein purification, and protein characterization
  • Ability to function and thrive in a multidisciplinary environment and to work in teams
  • Experience in publishing articles in peer reviewed journals
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Interest in mentoring / supervising graduate and undergraduate students
  • Ability to manage priorities and timelines

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in microscopy (optical, confocal, fluorescence, Raman, SEM, TEM, AFM, SPM)
  • Experience in bionano characterization (SPR, QCM, SFG, XRD, SAXS, ellipsometry, etc)
