Position Description

The Jaffe research team at the University of Washington is looking to add 1 or 2 post-doctoral fellows.  These positions are focused on understanding gas and aerosol chemistry from global and regional sources.   One position will focus on understanding O3 photochemistry in the presence of smoke.  This position will use photochemical and statistical/machine learning models to quantify impacts of wildfires on urban air quality.   A second position is available to study the use of low cost particulate and gas sensors to understood indoor air quality. We are seeking one to two candidates to join our faculty on a fulltime basis (100%) for a 12-month service period.  Positions in this title are non-tenure track and not promotion eligible. 

The primary responsibilities for both positions include:

  • Evaluation and interpret atmospheric observations to understand air quality implications.
  • Use observations with other tools such as photochemical models, statistical/machine learning models, meteorology, satellite data, etc. to better understand the specific questions.
  • Publish the results in top scientific journals.

The initial appointment will be for one year with possible extensions.  Compensation for the position is competitive and post docs at the University of Washington are considered faculty and receive a full benefits package.   For more information about the Jaffe research group, the Mt. Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, or closely related field, or foreign equivalent.

Qualification for these positions include strong expertise in one (or more) of the following areas:  Instrumentation for gas and aerosol measurements, data interpretation, photochemical modeling, statistical modeling (e.g Generalized Additive Modeling, Random Forest, etc.), integration of other data (e.g. meteorology, satellite data, etc.)

Good communication skills and past experience in publishing in scientific journals is also required.  The position is based at the UW Bothell campus, but will include field work and significant interactions with our colleagues at UW Seattle and other universities.
