Position Description

The department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine is seeking a full-time gross anatomy instructor who will assist with the instruction of anatomy in both the medical and undergraduate curricula of UW and Gonzaga University, respectively. The University of Washington – Gonzaga University Regional Health Partnership was established in 2015 to continue providing quality medical instruction in Spokane, WA through the UWSOM regional model. This position is a one-year appointment as a full-time Lecturer with an anticipated start date of Fall 2022. The gross anatomy instructor will gain this valuable experience with the possibility of up to two one-year renewal appointments. University of Washington faculty appointments hold appointments with a 12-month service period (July 1 - June 30). 

The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist with the preparation and instruction of laboratory sessions, which include the use of cadavers and models. Fulfillment of this responsibility will include the following duties:

  • Perform dissections on cadavers so they may be used as prosection materials during lab
  • Assist with the setup of lab sessions
  • Assist with teaching during prosection and model-based labs
  • Guide students through their own dissections on cadavers
  • Deliver lectures covering gross anatomy and embryology material
  • Participate in regular meetings to plan and prepare for lectures, labs, and assessment
  • Assist with grading and other logistical efforts involving anatomy instruction
  • Management of gross anatomy resources

As a training position, the gross anatomy instructor will also be expected to participate in professional development activities that prepare them to fill a faculty position. This may include some or all of the following activities:

  • Development of teaching materials
  • Participation in professional development workshops
  • Conducting and publishing pedagogical research

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • MS (or foreign equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Strong desire to teach both medical and undergraduate anatomy

Desired:

  • PhD (or foreign equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Prior experience in a gross anatomy laboratory
