Position Description

The University of Washington, Department of Radiology, has an opening for a postdoctoral scholar position in oncology imaging.  This position contributes to the growth and success of the Department of Radiology by executing the mission and vision.  This position will assist the department in the processing and statistical analysis of clinical and imaging data for established and new project initiatives in oncological imaging.  Research is focused on development and validation of imaging biomarkers for monitoring disease progression and treatment response.  As part of this endeavor, the position holder will pre- or post-process imaging and clinical data, identify appropriate statistical approaches to answer study research questions, and implement data analysis techniques using a statistical programming language (R or Python).  This position offers opportunities to participate in publications, national and international conferences, and growth in a fast-paced research environment at the intersection of clinical research and advanced oncological imaging.

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position are as follows.  Conduct statistical data analysis of imaging endpoints and outcome parameters using SAS, SPSS, R and other statistical software.  Pre- and post-processing of medical imaging data for quantitative data extraction and analysis.  Compile results and report on the analysis methods, statistical results, and conclusions.  Consult with radiologists, clinicians, investigators, and others to evaluate analysis needs.  Collaborate with the principal investigators and other research team leaders to strategize and apply for new research grants.  Participate in the study design and development of established and new projects.  Assist in the development and support of the Department of Radiology research imaging infrastructure.  Maintain data organization and manage image data storage devices.

Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are initially for 12-months with opportunities to renew.  This appointment may not exceed 5 years, including postdoctoral experience(s) at other institutions.  Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply.  For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.  Anticipated start date would be September 1, 2022 but is negotiable.


Required Qualifications:

  • Completed MD or PhD in a medical imaging, mathematics, biostatistics, computer science, or related fields
  • At least one year experience working with medical imaging data format (e.g., DICOM, Nifti)
  • Proficiency in statistical programming using R or Python
  • Familiarity with machine learning-based analysist methods and fundamental concepts (train/test splits, bias-variance tradeoff, etc.)
  • Proficiency in statistical methodology for clinical and translational research
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

NOTE: This position will require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) or Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) facility.  SCCA requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at an SCCA facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the SCCA policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment
