Position Description

The Department of Radiology in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle is recruiting for one full-time (100% FTE) faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor without tenure (WOT) by reason of funding, commensurate with experience, to join the growing Molecular Imaging and Therapy service at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) to develop and lead PET/MR service with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023.    Assistant Professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30).  Associate Professors WOT and full Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30).  Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The University of Washington/FHCC Molecular Imaging and Therapy section is based at the FHCC, South Lake Union Campus.  This rapidly growing service provides nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapy services and offers clinical trial opportunities for SCCA patients in an outpatient setting.  The clinical PET/CT and general nuclear medicine imaging services have experienced steady growth for the past 5 years.  As the Director of Molecular Imaging and Therapy at FHCC, Dr. Delphine Chen and has more than doubled the clinical therapy service volume, with a rapidly growing Lu-177 dotatate service, recent opening of the I-131 thyroid cancer service, and imminent opening of the PSMA-targeted therapy service.  Consultation services for both patients and providers have also expanded significantly, leading to highly collaborative, multidisciplinary participation of nuclear medicine in the oncology practice at FHCC.  Multiple diagnostic and therapy radiopharmaceutical clinical trials are also run or supported by the FHCC nuclear medicine service.  Finally, with the impending expansion of the FHCC, the addition of a PET/MR and additional PET/CT and SPECT/CT cameras will further increase clinical volumes and provide ample opportunities for clinical and translational research.  The approaching installation of the new PET/MR drives the need for this position.  As a result of this rapid growth, the FHCC seeks to add a full-time clinical nuclear medicine physician or nuclear radiologist to the SCCA practice and lead the development of the clinical and research PET/MR service.

This position is based at the FHCC and will report to Dr. Delphine Chen.  The duties of this position include administering radiopharmaceutical therapies, interpretation of oncologic PET/CT, MRI, and general nuclear medicine imaging studies, and engaging with all team members across departments and patients to develop long-term collaborative relationships that enrich and enhance FHCC’s reputation for being patient-centered in all aspects of cancer care.  The successful candidate will be expected to focus on fulfilling all clinical service expectations, including but not limited to providing outstanding image interpretation, conducting thorough patient evaluations, providing reliable provider consultations through tumor boards and ad hoc requests, fully engaging and responding to any necessary activities to support clinical collaborations around patient care, administering therapies safely and effectively, supporting all clinical trial activities, and participating in call.  Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, specialty training in a relevant area such as abdominal, musculoskeletal, or chest imaging.

The University of Washington Department of Radiology covers many sites including the University of Washington Medical Center (Montlake, Northwest, and Eastside clinics), Harborview Medical Center, Veteran's Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and has an affiliate agreement for training with Seattle Children's Hospital.  All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • M.D., or foreign equivalent, in the field and eligibility for full medical licensure in Washington State
  • Successful completion of at least one of the following: combined nuclear medicine/diagnostic radiology residency or diagnostic radiology with nuclear medicine fellowship
  • Excellence in academic achievement as demonstrated by a record of scientific or educational presentations and/or publications
  • Experience with regulatory and clinical trial requirements for evaluating novel radiopharmaceuticals

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. 

NOTE: This position will require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) or Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) facility. FHCC/SCCA requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at a FHCC/SCCA facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the FHCC/SCCA policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment
