Position Description

The Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Built Environments (CBE) at the University of Washington (UW) invites nominations and applications to join our faculty as an Assistant Teaching Professor. The department has a dynamic culture of design and making including professional undergraduate and graduate degrees. We are searching for a candidate to teach across the curriculum at both introductory and advanced levels including design studios, lecture-based courses, and professionally-oriented technical courses. Landscape Architecture faculty are highly motivated, impact-driven, creative, and collaborative. Their teaching sustains and expands our capacity to provide high level, rigorous design-based education.

Due to internal scheduling constraints and to provide a greater opportunity for students to interact with the interview process, the date when applications will begin being evaluated has been extended to September 16, 2022.  The new anticipated start date for the position is December 16, 2022.  The other details about the position have not changed.

Values:

Justice and equity are essential to the development of a more inclusive foundation for the allied design and planning fields. By advancing our efforts to promote an environment that is welcoming to people of all cultures, races, sexes, abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities and/or expressions, ages, religions, and economic statuses, we are actively striving to make our department and college representative of the community and industries we serve where creativity, critical thinking and self-expression can not only exist, but thrive. This is reflected in the department’s Mission and Program Pillars and the CBE’s Strategic Framework built on a foundation of collaboration and impact, bold thought leadership, and equitable and just practices. In addition, we are continuing to re-envision the CBE and our departments through equity, inclusion, and access work, including ongoing diversification of our curricula, faculty expertise, and college-wide programming. Successful candidates will be expected to advance these values.

Our department and college are located in the heart of the rapidly growing, diverse, and vibrant Seattle metropolitan region. The Department of Landscape Architecture enrolls over 120 students,  in undergraduate and graduate programs including LAAB accredited MLA and BLA programs, as well as hundreds of non-majors each year.

People who do not see themselves historically represented in academia and the landscape architecture profession are encouraged to apply.

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and coordinating coursework, syllabi, and curricula

  • Experience working in the built environment professions of landscape architecture, architecture, urban design and planning, and/or urban horticulture

  • Professional licensure

  • Demonstrated excellence in landscape architectural design

  • Demonstrated success with collaborative and interdisciplinary practice and/or teaching

This is a full time 9-month (Sept 16th - June 15th), multi-year appointment with an anticipated start date of December 16, 2022 with an expectation that approximately 80% of time is dedicated to teaching and 20% to departmental, college and/or University service.
