The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is an integral component of the UW School of Medicine and shares UW Medicine’s mission to ‘Improve the Health of the Public.’ We accomplish this by providing the best care we can today, conducting research to develop better treatments for tomorrow, and inspiring and training the next generation of health care professionals for the Pacific Northwest. Our core values include openness, transparency, integrity, engagement, collaboration and mutual respect. Our department is the third largest within the School of Medicine with an annual operating budget in excess of $100 M and a research budget of approximately $50M.

As the only academic psychiatry department serving Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, we are committed to improving access to psychiatric care and consultation throughout the greater Pacific Northwest. Our educational programs include a required medical student clerkship for 260 medical students per year at some 30 sites across the WWAMI region, a nationally competitive psychiatry residency program with more than 90 psychiatry residents in Seattle and in two regional residency tracks in Idaho and Montana, subspecialty fellowships in addiction, child and adolescent, consultation-liaison, perinatal mental health and geriatric psychiatry, a nationally renowned scientist-practitioner psychology internship program, and numerous post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships.

UW Medicine Garvey Institute of Brain Health Solutions  

The Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions (GIBHS) at UW Medicine supports a dynamic community of clinicians and researchers in tackling one of the biggest challenges of our generation — the personal, medical and societal burden of brain disorders — by accelerating access to effective prevention and treatment. Its mission is to develop, test and rapidly deploy innovative approaches to prevent and treat brain health and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, addiction, dementia, and suicide that rob millions of individuals of the opportunity to lead healthy and productive lives. Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the UW Medicine Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions is seeking candidates for one full-time, faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor without tenure due to funding (WOT). This new position will be supported, in part, by an endowment from the Tim B. Engle Endowed Professorship for Brain Health Innovations. Associate and Full Professors are eligible for indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The anticipated start date for this position is Summer 2022. Rank will be determined commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The holder of this position will have the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines and collaborate with research and clinical faculty across the University of Washington and UW Medicine. The individual chosen for this position will be expected to successfully lead the Garvey Institute’s mission to investigate factors in cognitive aging, including directing a clinical research program in cognitive aging and a clinical program that supports cognitive aging and overseeing the training and mentorship of trainees and junior faculty. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. 

Factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, achieving regional or national recognition as a clinician-scientist in the field of cognitive aging and experience, and holding a diverse funding portfolio.

Qualifications

  1. An MD or DO or foreign equivalent, or a PhD or PsyD, or foreign equivalent in psychology or related field. 
  2. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
