Position Description

The Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington, School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to work in the Shah Lab.

The Shah Lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms of immunopathology and protection to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We combine observations made in human populations using genetic or transcriptional approaches with detailed mechanistic studies in small animal models. A major focus of the lab is the relationship between the integrated stress response, a cellular adaptation to harsh environmental conditions and TB immune pathology and spread.

The candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to one or more projects, learning advanced cytometry, cellular and molecular immunology techniques, and/or computational immunology. 

Specific lines of inquiry include:

  • Preclinical evaluation of novel integrated stress response inhibitors as TB therapy
  • Understanding the effects of the integrated stress response on macrophage, dendritic cell, and T cell function in the granuloma
  • Describing he effect of integrated stress responses on granuloma structure using spatial immunology techniques (fluorescence microscopy and imaging mass cytometry) , and
  • Dissecting the genetic determinants of stress-induced Mtb susceptibility

This is a full-time position with a 12 month (July 1 - June 30) service period with the possibility for yearly renewal dependent upon performance and continued funding. The start date for this position would be Spring 2022.

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. The Shah Lab is located on the University of Washington’s South Lake Union campus, in close proximity to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Seattle Children’s Research Institute among other major partners in Seattle’s global health “hub.”  Dr. Shah’s lab is supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Veterans’ Health Administration.

Qualifications

Ideal candidate must have a PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) in Immunology, Biology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, or a closely related discipline. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of experience in laboratory-based research and/or modeling/simulation and have published several first author papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The work is highly collaborative, so excellent written and oral communication skills are required as is the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities with exceptional organizational and time management skills.
