Organization: Aquatic and Fishery Sciences

Title: Assistant Teaching Professor - Marine Ecology - School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS)

Position Details

Position Description

The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences invites applications for a full time (100% FTE), 9-month non-tenured faculty position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor in the broad field of marine ecology. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Marine Biology program, which offers a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Marine Biology housed within the College of the Environment.

The Marine Biology degree is a unique collaboration between the School of Oceanography and the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, in partnership with the Friday Harbor Laboratories. This synergistic relationship brings together a wide cross-section of faculty representing the multiple facets of Marine Biology, providing a collegial and collaborative culture with a range of teaching and curriculum development opportunities.  Students from across campus come to our program to better understand human impacts on marine ecosystems, and the number choosing to major in marine biology is growing rapidly.

The anticipated start date of the position is September 16, 2022.  The Assistant Teaching Professor will be hired on multi-year appointments with a 9-month service period (September 16 through June 15) that may allow for additional opportunities to teach or pursue research or other scholarly activities during the summer. The initial appointment duration will be for three years with renewal decision at the end of year two. Although this position is not tenure eligible, it includes faculty voting rights and a pathway for career advancement and promotion in rank.

All UW faculty engage in teaching, scholarship, and service. Our Teaching Professors are long-term educational professionals who combine instructional excellence with a variety of leadership, community building, outreach, pedagogy advances, and scholarship. The successful applicant will:

1. teach 4 – 6 courses per year (quarter system) across all levels in the Marine Biology program. Specific teaching responsibilities will be commensurate with the candidate’s expertise and curricular needs and may include:

  • a core course in marine ecology for Marine Biology majors
  • introductory courses highlighting key organismal groups or ecosystems vulnerable to ocean change (such as marine mammals, coral reefs, intertidal, estuarine, polar or deep sea ecosystems) offered to the campus as a whole
  • courses in science communication
  • specialized upper division courses which may also serve graduate students (for example in the use of large ecological data sets, remote sensing or GIS)

2. advance educational scholarship in the teaching program with emphasis on innovative pedagogy and attention to diversity, equity and inclusion. This may include contributing to the growing community of pedagogical researchers within the College.

3. play an active role in School, College and University leadership, for example, by engaging in governance, serving on key committees, contributing to the implementation of best practices throughout the instructional program and the training and mentoring of teaching assistants.

Our Schools strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where people of all backgrounds, who bring a range of perspectives and life experiences, are welcomed, heard and supported. We acknowledge that if the marine sciences do not adequately reflect the diversity of national and local populations, then marine policy and management are much less likely to reflect the knowledge, interest and will of impacted communities. We seek candidates who will contribute substantially to these efforts and encourage applications from underrepresented groups. In all aspects of this position, the candidate will join us to promote a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment for students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in the biological marine sciences or a related field by the start date of the appointment.
