Position Description

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington, seeks a director to serve as the Division Head of our Specimen Procurement Division on the clinician-teacher pathway. In addition to serving as Head of the Division, this position will also provide leadership for our Reference Laboratory teams and align DLMP’s shared services in providing outstanding service for clients within and outside of UW Medicine.  Responsibilities include the representation of clinical needs in decision-making related to pre-analytical and post-analytical processes, oversight of specimen processing and phlebotomy management across DLMP locations, coordination with shared services teams that include courier and client support services, and collaboration with research units on DLMP services related to specimen procurement. Applicants are also expected to contribute research/scholarly work, ideally in the domains of innovative methods of laboratory service delivery, quality improvement, new test development, and/or the impact of laboratory medicine on health care and society. Additional responsibilities include the teaching of residents, fellows, medical students and medical laboratory scientist program undergraduates, especially in the domains of pre-analytics, laboratory management, and outreach.

This appointment may be at the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor, without tenure due to reasons of funding. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank.

Assistant Professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate and Full Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This is a full-time, 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30) position and remains open until filled with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022, but is flexible.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess (1) an MD (or foreign equivalent) and be board certified or board-eligible in clinical pathology or (2) an earned PhD in a related field (or foreign equivalent) and be board certified in Clinical Chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Documented expertise directing clinical laboratories and in the clinical interpretation of test results is required. A record of research, as documented by publications, is also required. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H1-B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
