The University of Washington Department of Global Health, which bridges the Schools of Medicine (SOM) and Public Health (SPH), seeks up to two individuals to join our faculty as assistant teaching professors. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to perform with high motivation, activities that are impact-driven, creative and collaborative. Our department values and honors excellence in teaching, mentoring and service in order to achieve our mission: to improve health for all through research, education, training, and service; to understand and address the causes of disease and health inequities at multiple levels; and to collaborate with partners to develop and sustain locally-led, quality health systems, programs and policies. We are dedicated to hiring faculty who model the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism and the de-colonialization of global health through all elements of their academic portfolio.  

We invite applications for two faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure eligible) in the Department of Global Health. Each position is full time (100% FTE) within a 12-month service period, with 100% of salary covered by the School of Public Health Compensation Policy. The potential anticipated start date is as early as Spring 2022. The position is based in Seattle, Washington. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. The successful applicant for this position will be expected to: 

1. Provide educational leadership including classroom teaching, curriculum development, and student mentoring for undergraduate and graduate students in global health, with emphasis on active engagement, innovative pedagogy and increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism and de-colonization within the classroom; 

2. Support DGH mission and SPH and SOM priorities of advancing health equity, through teaching that focuses on evidence-based approaches to promote and improve health among diverse populations globally and domestically. 

3. Increase DGH instructional capacity and curriculum quality in a wide range of global health content and methodological areas by contributing to course development plans and course reviews in collaboration with Academic Programs and Student Services leadership. 

4. Contribute to the department’s mission, community, and culture through active participation in departmental, school and university committees and other activities, and collaborating with other faculty members, staff, students, partners and community stakeholders.

Qualifications

Applicants must have: 

  1. A master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in global health, public health, epidemiology or a related field;

  2. A record of high-quality and innovative teaching, including at least 3 years of teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; 

  3. Strong skills in communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams; and 

  4. Demonstrated record of increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism and de-colonization. 

We welcome applicants who have experience instructing in any line of scholarly inquiry related to global health. 

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to: a PhD or other doctoral degree in global health or another field of public health or medicine; familiarity with epidemiology, quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, implementation science, and community-based participatory approaches; and experience instructing on subjects such as the following: Global Health Disparities, Determinants, Policies, and Outcomes; Multidisciplinary Perspectives in Global Health; Confronting Global Diseases: Introductory Biologic Principles and Context; Global Health & Justice; Advanced Biologic Principles of Global Diseases; Problems in Global Health; Global Societal Determinants of Health; Global Mental Health; or Global Violence and Health; teaching undergraduates on topics such as History and Practice of Public Health; Science in Public Health; Research Methods in Public Health; Ethics, Social Justice, and Policy in Public Health; Structural Racism in Public Health: experience mentoring students at the graduate or undergraduate level. 

Instructions

All applicants are asked to submit: 

  1. A cover letter of approximately 600 words describing their future potential contributions to the UW Department of Global Health, community, and the field of global health, based on their past accomplishments, experiences, and leadership; 

  2. An up-to-date curriculum vitae detailing teaching, mentorship, service, publications, honors, and leadership experiences; 

  3. A statement of approximately 600 words describing the applicant’s accomplishments and interests in teaching and mentoring; 

  4. A statement of approximately 600 words describing the applicant’s demonstrated experience in support of increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic or other settings. 

  5. Contact information for four (4) people willing to provide a letter of reference. Letters will only be requested during the final review stages. 

Review of applications will begin after February 20, 2022 (Priority deadline). Applicants who submit all required documents by February 20, 2022 are guaranteed full consideration. Applications received after February 20, 2022 will be reviewed on a weekly basis at the discretion of the search committee until the position is filled or closed.
