Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is offering an outstanding opportunity for a part- or full-time faculty position in our Division of Prosthetics & Orthotics. FTEs of 50% or greater will be considered. This position may be eligible for permanent residence sponsorship for 100% FTE employment. This position has an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 – June 30) and will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (without tenure due to source of funding, which is typical of ranked faculty appointments within the department). Anticipated start date is July 1, 2022, but other dates may be considered.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers a collaborative and multidisciplinary academic environment. Opportunities will be available for building an academic career that includes teaching, research opportunities, and program development.

The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill requirements for advancement along the Clinician-Scientist pathway of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine. Job duties include teaching coursework in the Master of Prosthetics & Orthotics (MPO) Program; mentoring and advising MPO students and students in the Rehabilitation Science PhD Program; recruiting and evaluating candidates for admission to the MPO Program; and participating in continuous and periodic self-study activities to maintain program accreditation. Opportunities will be available to collaborate with other faculty on existing research projects and to develop an externally funded research program.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in education, research, and clinical care.  The Department’s various research programs, led by world-renowned leaders in Rehabilitation Science, as well as academic programs including the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics (MPO), Master of Occupational Therapy, and PhD in Rehabilitation Science Programs, provide rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning. The Department has an exceptional record of successful extramural research funding and interprofessional collaboration.    

The University of Washington enrolls approximately 60,000 students each year across its three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell) and thrives as a center for groundbreaking research in a variety of fields. Located on the Seattle campus, the UW MPO program enrolls approximately 12 incoming students per year and collaborates with other medical and research centers within and beyond the University.

The department currently holds $19 million in grants from federal and foundation funding sources.

Qualifications

  • At the time of application, must possess a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Rehabilitation Science or a related field
  • At the time of application, must be certified to practice Prosthetics & Orthotics through the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics
  • Must hold or be eligible for a professional prosthetist and orthotist license in the state of Washington
  • Must have at least three (3) years of clinical experience in Prosthetics & Orthotics, a record of relevant research, and experience teaching and/or mentoring Prosthetics & Orthotics students

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or foreign equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
