Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Division of Physical Therapy, is offering an outstanding opportunity for two (2) physical therapists to join our faculty. These will be full-time academic appointments with an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 – June 30), appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (without tenure due to source of funding, which is typical of ranked faculty appointments within the department). Except for distinctions related to funding sources, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2022, but other dates may be considered.

As a member of the Division of Physical Therapy, the successful candidates will participate in research as well as teaching and teaching-related activities and will be expected to fulfill requirements for advancement along the Clinician-Scientist pathway of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine. There will be significant responsibility for teaching core courses in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, numbering on average between four and six annually, as well as opportunity to advise and mentor DPT students and students in the department’s PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science. The successful candidates will have opportunity to collaborate with existing research teams, as well as to strengthen or develop their own research portfolios.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in education, research, and clinical care.  The Department’s various research programs, led by world-renowned leaders in Rehabilitation Science, as well as academic programs including the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics (MPO), Master of Occupational Therapy, and PhD in Rehabilitation Science programs, provide rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning. The Department has an exceptional record of successful extramural research funding and interprofessional collaboration.    

The University of Washington enrolls approximately 60,000 students each year across its three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell) and thrives as a center for groundbreaking research in a variety of fields. Located on the Seattle campus, the UW DPT program enrolls approximately 50 students per year and collaborates with other medical and research centers within and beyond the University.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine ranked #5 in US News & World Report, is a dynamic academic and clinical department in the University of Washington School of Medicine and Affiliated Hospitals, which include the UW Medical Centers, Harborview Medical Center, Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The department currently holds $19 million in grants from federal and foundation funding sources.

Qualifications

The successful candidates must

  • have an academic doctoral degree (PhD or foreign equivalent) in Rehabilitation Science or a relevant field and a Physical Therapy degree
  • be licensed or eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in the State of Washington
  • have teaching expertise in a DPT program or in a related program
  • have an established research agenda that includes publications in peer-reviewed journals and evidence of success in funding their research or strong potential for grantsmanship

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or foreign equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
