General Internal Medicine Hospitalist and Consultative Medicine Open Positions AY 2022-23

The 16 open positions are full-time or part-time 12-month (July 1-June 30 service period), annual appointments and will be at the Clinical Instructor or Clinical Assistant Professor level.

Anticipated start date will be July 1, 2022

The Hospital Medicine Program, part of the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) and the Department of Medicine, is currently accepting online applications.  GIM will review candidate applications for positions on the Hospital Medicine Service and Medicine Consult Service.  Candidates may be considered at individual or multiple sections of GIM—Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center (Montlake and Northwest Campuses), and VA Puget Sound Health Care System.  University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Harborview Medical Center (HMC)

The Hospital Medicine Program at HMC offers daytime and/or night-time positions for full or part-time academic internists.  Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to providing high value care to the patients of HMC in the spirit of service to our community’s most vulnerable populations with a special dedication to improving health systems, medical education and scholarship.

Daytime hospitalists will have the opportunity to work on a variety of clinical services ranging from primary medicine services, consultative medicine and perioperative medicine services, with opportunities to interact with students and residents from a variety of departments.

Night-time hospitalists will work with a team of residents and students to provide nighttime coverage for the hospitalist teams and ensure critical attending coverage during the evening.

University of Washington Medical Center - Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake)

The Hospital Medicine Program at UWMC-Montlake consists of the Hospital Medicine Service and Medicine Consult Service.  These services offer daytime and/or nighttime positions for full or part-time academic internists.  Successful applicants will demonstrate excellence in clinical care and a commitment to academic medicine with an interest in teaching, quality improvement work or research.

Duties on the Medicine Consult Service include patient care, perioperative medical consultation and teaching in the inpatient and outpatient settings.  Duties on the Hospital Medicine Service include patient care and teaching on the general medicine wards.  Some applicants may choose a blend of consultative and hospital medicine duties.

University of Washington Medical Center - Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW)

The Hospital Medicine Program at UWMC-NW offers daytime and/or nighttime positions for full or part-time internists seeking to practice at a community hospital within an academic system.  Three different types of positions are available on the Hospitalist team at UWMC-NW: primarily daytime hospitalist positions, night hospitalist positions, and night ICU positions.  For all, successful applicants will demonstrate excellence in patient care, willingness to contribute to quality improvement, dedication to teamwork, and commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration.  

Hospitalists at UWMC-NW provide inpatient care for a broad scope of patients in consulting and attending roles.  While UWMC-NW campus is primarily focused on the clinical care of patients, it does offer teaching opportunities as well.  For those specifically interested in nighttime General Hospitalist work, nocturnist positions are available.

A separate position is that of the Night ICU Hospitalist.  Physicians in this role will work 9-hour overnight shifts primarily admitting to and covering patients in the ICU.  Applicants will be expected to perform procedures including central line placement and paracentesis, but would not be asked to intubate. Additional training in these procedures would be available if needed. Successful applicants should have an interest in cultivating critical care skills, but will have access to a pulmonary and critical care specialist for additional support.

VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS)

The VA Puget Sound Health Care System proudly serves more than 112,000 Veterans living in the Pacific Northwest and is the main referral center for VA Northwest Health Network, also called VISN20 (encompassing Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington). We are dedicated to excellence in the clinical care of Veterans, medical education, and research.

In addition to caring for hospitalized patients, we also perform inpatient medicine consultation and staff a preoperative medical consult clinic for medically complex patients. We have a strong affiliation with the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine and enjoy teaching medical students and residents. We are actively engaged in hospital operations and are steadily growing our scholarship portfolio with particular interest in medical education and quality/process improvement.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an MD degree (or foreign equivalent) and board certification* in Internal Medicine (or foreign equivalent).

*Note: Board certification in Internal Medicine must be completed within two years after residency.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. University sponsorship is not possible for a J-1 visa or Employment-Based (EB) visas for permanent residence.

For VAPSHCS applicants: Applicants must be U.S. Citizens (permanent residents may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

Applications will be accepted starting the week of September 6th. To facilitate timely scheduling of interviews, we encourage submitting your application by September 30th or as soon as possible. Applications after September 30th are welcome and interviews will be scheduled as promptly as possible during October through January, depending on available open positions*. The recruitment committee will review applications in the order received.

  1. Cover letter – please provide a one- to two-page document which includes your area(s) of interest (consult, quality, education, etc.) if applicable
  2. *Note regarding timeline of job offers: In past years GIM has typically extended job offers in January and February, although may continue recruitment beyond then.  The number of job openings and timing of offers depends in part on whether existing faculty change clinical commitments and the decisions of other candidates. Due to uncertainty about those factors, GIM is unable to specify an exact response date, but welcome ongoing communication with applicants.
