Position Description

The Department of Architecture at the University of Washington invites nominations and applications to join our faculty as Assistant Teaching Professor in Digital Modeling, Fabrication and Design to sustain and expand our capacity to deliver digital modeling, fabrication and design courses. The Department has a dynamic culture of design and making including undergraduate and graduate degree concentrations and a Master of Science in Design Technology. We are searching for a candidate who can teach at all levels of our program including core digital modeling courses taken by all our students as well as advanced digital design and fabrication courses for our Masters students.

Located in the heart of the rapidly growing, diverse, and vibrant community of the Seattle metropolitan region, our Department resides in the College of Built Environments and enrolls over 180 students, divided between undergraduate and graduate programs including a NAAB accredited MArch Program, MS and BA degrees, as well as hundreds of non-majors each year.

Responsibilities & Terms

Teaching faculty are expected to be on campus during the academic year to teach courses, mentor students, and engage in service activities which may include advising students, assisting with student organizations, and serving on departmental and college committees. The selected candidate will be assigned courses that may include studios, lectures, and seminar courses that include both required and elective courses. The selected candidate will be expected to teach digital modeling and/or fabrication courses, mentor emerging designers with diverse backgrounds, develop and coordinate coursework, and engage in collaborative teaching.

This is a part-time or full-time 9-month (Sept 16th - June 15th), multi-year appointment (not eligible for tenure) with an anticipated start date of Spring Quarter 2023 with an expectation that approximately 80% of time is dedicated to teaching and 20% to Departmental, College and/or University service. According to the candidate's preference we are willing to consider an appointment that ranges from 50%-100% FTE. Please note that positions for less than 100% FTE are not eligible for visa or green card sponsorship. This position is for an initial three-year term with the possibility of renewals. The position carries full fringe benefits, and is promotable to Associate and Full Teaching Professor with renewal terms of more than 3 years possible.

Annual Salary Range = $70,000 - $80,000


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Professional degree in Architecture as accredited by the NAAB or foreign equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in digital design and fabrication within architectural, product, and/or furniture design 

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and coordinating coursework
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in architecture
