The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ecology in the Division of Science and Mathematics in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month per year service period that begins September 2022. The successful candidate will be expected to apply rigorous ecological principles and approaches to address pressing environmental problems and involve undergraduate students in faculty research.  They will teach courses in ecology, as well as introductory biology, general science courses for non-majors, and/or a course in their area of specialization, and will contribute to our Environmental Science major (including our Conservation Biology and Ecology option) and will support other majors (https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/admissions/undergraduate-majors) at UW Tacoma.  Additionally, this candidate will create inclusive spaces to support the success of students from diverse racial/ethnic and cultural populations, and integrate new pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct high quality, creative, and impactful research in an area of applied ecology that complements the research of our current faculty (www.tacoma.uw.edu/ecology). These areas could include, but are not limited to, conservation biology, wildlife ecology, fisheries biology, forest ecology, plant ecology, restoration ecology, or urban ecology.  They will be encouraged to make room for traditional/indigenous ecological knowledge, anti-racist, or decolonial approaches. and to emphasize collaborative or community-engaged approaches in their research (for examples across campus, see https://he.cecollaboratory.com/uwt). They will have opportunities to contribute to or expand upon current research initiatives at UW Tacoma (www.tacoma.uw.edu/ecology,) and/or across UW.

The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was founded in 1990 and has evolved into a thriving downtown campus that serves students of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds in the South Puget Sound. UWT is designated as an Asian-American, Native American and Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Minority Serving Institution, and a Carnegie Community Engaged Campus.  The campus is located on the traditional land of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. The region hosts an impressive range of ecologically significant ecosystems, from temperate rainforests to deserts, active volcanoes, our nation’s second-largest estuary, and the Pacific Ocean.   Faculty have access to the resources of a major research university, including an extensive library system, but work and teach within a small campus setting.  Our campus provides a supportive environment for the development of creative teaching, research and community collaborations. Qualifications

This position requires an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment in Ecology or related field. Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation may be appointed on an acting basis.

  6. A copy of your most creative or impactful published scholarly work.
  7. Evidence of teaching effectiveness (this might include: sample syllabi, quantitative student evaluations, and/or peer teaching evaluations).
  8. Names and contact information for three professional references.
