Position Description

The School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington welcomes applications for Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Photo/Media Concentration. About Photo/Media at the School of Art + Art History + Design:

As a Research I university, UW seeks to hire distinguished faculty members with outstanding qualifications who are developing and maintaining an ongoing professional career.  A candidate should endeavor to teach at all levels in the undergraduate and graduate Photo/Media program. 

The successful candidate will be expected to establish or continue a research practice that unsettles established paradigms; this practice could engage with analyses of race, indigeneity, colonialism, empire, ableism, environmental issues, migration, diaspora, amongst others. 

Faculty in the Photo/Media Program are invested in art as a form of critical inquiry, integrating research, and supportive of interdisciplinary approaches to making work and pedagogy. The faculty work with undergraduate and graduate art students, as well as students from other disciplines in the School and across the university. The Photo/Media undergraduate curriculum offers formal and technical knowledge as well as individual research, critical thinking, experimentation, and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues in the arts. Graduate students in the Photo/Media program work closely with their faculty members to develop conceptual and often interdisciplinary artistic practices.

The Photo/Media program facilities include traditional black and white darkrooms, large format digital printers, state-of-the-art sound studio, film and digital cameras, professional video cameras, microphones, lighting equipment, and various editing suites. The Photo/Media department maintains multiple student galleries, graduate studios, a lighting studio, and classrooms within the School of Art + Art History + Design.

Qualifications

An MFA degree, or foreign equivalent, is required by the start of the appointment. Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree or foreign equivalent or a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) plus five years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience in PhotoMedia.
