The Department of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) is recruiting a new Associate Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to provide leadership and guidance for the Department of Medicine with initiatives to further the Department’s efforts to directly confront bias and racism at the individual, program, departmental, and systemic levels through innovative programs and policies in support of all divisions and programs, as well as in our partnerships with local, regional and global partners and communities that we serve. 

Reporting directly to the Chair, this position serves as Chair of the Department’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, plays a key role in development of the strategic planning process, and will provide advice and counsel to the newly established Gender and Equity Council.

Working closely with the Department Chair and department leadership team, the Associate Chair will lead both the short- and long-term planning and development of DEI programs to grow and sustain an equitable and inclusive working and learning environment for students, trainees, faculty and staff and will provide actionable items and timeframes for each initiative.  Additionally, in conjunction with Department leadership and the DEI Committee, annually re-evaluate the effectiveness of current initiatives to address the overall diversity, equity, and social justice needs and goals of the Department. The candidate will use their expert organizational skills to work positively and proactively with diverse individuals in a leadership role. This position would also provide clinical care and provide supervision and mentoring of trainees.

Appointment to the full-time faculty would be at the rank of associate or full professor without tenure due to funding (WOT), commensurate with experience. This position would have an annual service period of 12 months [July 1-June 30] and would be based in Seattle, WA. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.  Applications are accepted until the position is filled. The anticipated start date would be September 2021.


The Associate Chair will have demonstrated expertise in research and/or administration relevant to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Candidates should have an MD (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in General Internal Medicine or Medicine subspecialty (or foreign equivalent). In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
