Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Cardiology

Position Details

Position Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine at the University of Washington to study the transforming growth factor beta signaling in aortic homeostasis and disease.

This is a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar position on an annual,12-month appointment (July 1-June 30) with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2021.  Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

The project will continue investigations that test hypotheses about the role of smooth muscle cell transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling in normal aortic physiology and in the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms. The project builds on over 20 years of work, with publications including: Schulick et al., PNAS 1998;95:6983; Agah et al., Circ Res 2000;86:1031; Frutkin et al., ATVB 2009;29:1251; Jaffe et al., ATVB 2012;32:e1; Hu et al., ATVB 2015;35:2647; Wei et al., JAHA 2017; Jan24;6(1); Angelov et al., ATVB 2017;37:2102; and Zhu et al., ATVB 2021 (in press).  Studies are carried out with the aid of genetically modified mice, in which TGF-β signaling is enhanced or impaired. Approaches include analysis of gene expression both in bulk and single-cell RNA samples, proteomics, immunoblotting, microscopy, myography, and bioinformatics.  Epigenetics is an emerging focus.  Experience in bioinformatics, including use of “R” is highly desirable.

The University of Washington is a rich environment for research in cardiovascular biology and disease.  Seattle is a pleasant place to live.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree relevant to biological science and a strong publication record, including first-authorships.
