The UW Medicine Diabetes Institute (UWMDI) seeks postdoctoral fellowship applicants interested in investigating the causes and consequences of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic and vascular disorders.
The UWMDI is the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, integrating superb care for patients with basic, clinical and translational research in diabetes, obesity and their complications with the overall goal of translating research discoveries into improved strategies for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these disorders. Housed in the new, state-of-the-art UW Medicine South Lake Union 3.2 facility, the UWMDI brings together comprehensive research and patient care programs under one roof, creating a synergistic environment for advancing new breakthroughs from bench to bedside. The Institute draws upon the expertise of a wide range of investigators with complementary interests in diabetes, obesity, inflammation, lipid metabolism, neuroscience, atherosclerosis, and kidney disease. Members of the Institute’s faculty conduct both basic research to clarify the mechanisms causing diabetes and obesity and their consequences, and translational and clinical research to transform their research findings into clinical solutions. Basic research within the UWMDI is comprised of 3 distinct thematic programs: Diabetes and the Islet, Diabetes and Metabolism and Diabetes Complications.

Postdoctoral fellowships are appointed for 12-month full-time positions. Limited funds may be available for non-US citizens, however, the primary funding for these positions comes from the National Institutes of Health which requires applicants be US Citizens or permanent US residents. Extensions of appointments are possible, subject to availability of funds. Multiple positions within the UWMDI are available; upon receipt of eligible applications, each applicant will be matched with a research program/investigator that best aligns with their interests.
Positions are for research only activities, and do not include clinical training or observerships. Applicants who are interested in clinical experience should apply through the ACGME clinical fellowship through the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.
Qualifications
Ph.D. and/or M.D. or foreign equivalent required. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in metabolic physiology, neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, vascular or renal biology. Applicants with independent funding sources will also be considered.
