Position Description

The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, University of Washington is accepting applications for a full-time faculty member at the level of Associate Professor or Full Professor, WOT (without tenure due to funding), commensurate with experience, to fulfill the position of Director of the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute (UWMDI) at South Lake Union. 

The UWMDI is a multi-disciplinary research institute focused on the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus and its complications.  This academic position will lead efforts to develop and support basic, translational and clinical research towards a deeper understanding of diabetes pathophysiology, treatment innovation, and prevention, complementing and expanding ongoing research activities at UWMDI.  The Director of the UW Diabetes Institute will partner with various Division and Department heads to recruit and retain investigators within the UWMDI spanning basic science, clinical, and population-based research, and will work with clinical leadership to advance innovations in diabetes care delivery.  This position will lead and develop translational research and education programs.  The successful candidate will partner with leadership within UW Medicine to grow the multi-disciplinary nature of the UWMDI.  The Institute Director would have substantial resources with which to recruit additional colleagues in the Institute.  Importantly, the UWMDI Director will work with UW Advancement to increase philanthropic support for the UWMDI and with UW leadership to advance initiatives to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in both research and diabetes care delivery.  Lastly, the UWMDI Director will contribute to complimentary educational efforts through resident/graduate student and/or fellow education, and may provide clinical service in the Endocrinology clinic and/or inpatient consultation service, dependent upon their credentials and activities.  

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. This position has an annual service period of 12 months [July 1-June 30].

This position is anticipated to start on September 1, 2021 or after.

Qualifications

A successful applicant would be expected to have an established research program in basic, translational or clinical research in the area of diabetes. The candidate must have demonstrated ability to fund and lead an independent research program and acquire new grant funding from extramural sources, as well as demonstrated success in the mentoring and leadership of young investigators

Applicants must have an MD or PhD (or foreign equivalents).  If MD with clinical activities, applicants must have board certification in Internal Medicine and/or Endocrinology (or foreign equivalent).  In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
