Overview

The UW Tacoma’s School of Education (SoE) is seeking applications for two (2) 0.50 FTE non-tenure-track Teaching Associates/Field Supervisors (hereinafter referred to as  Field Supervisors) to join our Teacher Certification Program (TCP) for 9 to 10 month annual contract. The expected start date is around August 16, 2021 and will be negotiated with the SoE Dean and Director of Field Placements & Partnerships. 

Field Supervisors in our TCP are the primary advocates and contacts for our teacher candidates during their field experiences in local-area K-12 partner schools. They act as a liaison between teacher candidates, SoE key personnel (Director of Field Placements & Partnerships, SoE faculty, and academic advisors), and K-12 mentor teachers/school administrators throughout the assigned teacher candidates’ field experiences. As such, Field Supervisors are ambassadors of SoE’s mission and values. They report directly to the Director of Field Placements & Partnerships (hereinafter referred to as Director) with a dotted-line to the School of Education’s Faculty Council. These positions are not tenure-eligible, tenure-leading, or tenure-track; however, annual renewal is possible given enrollments, program needs, and satisfactory performance.

We are seeking applicants from individuals who are able to support teacher candidates in our three TCP tracks: (a) dual-track K-8 Special Education, (b) dual-track K-8 Teaching English Language Learners, and (c) Secondary Mathematics or Science Education.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Evaluate, mentor, and supervise assigned teacher candidates to have successful field or student teaching experiences (approx. 85% of workload):

  • Maintain close communication with each assigned candidate throughout the field experience, providing regular assistance and support as needed.
  • At least once per quarter, meet each candidate, mentor, and the field supervisor team (triad) to assess the candidate progress, and develop a collaborative plan for continued growth and movement toward independent teaching.
  • Meet regularly with each candidate to observe performance in the field and provide constructive feedback. Maintain a record of those visits and any key topics addressed.
  • Evaluate the candidate at regular intervals through observations and use of both the Assessment of Standards for Essential Skills and Dispositions, and the program’s Formal Lesson Observation tools. Support mentor teachers in scheduling and using the evaluation tools.
  • Write a final letter of recommendation for each candidate for certification records and candidate support. Complete confidential reference forms as needed/requested by the candidate.
  • Support candidates with edTPA requirements. Work with the Director to become familiar with and use the current edTPA and TPEP tools/rubrics as part of candidate discussions and evaluation of progress. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Director regarding candidate progress. As needed, document and communicate any concerns to the Director.

2. Other Duties (approx. 15% of workload):

  • In collaboration with faculty of record for reflective seminar, assist with the facilitation of select small groups of candidates during the teaching internship. 
  • Attend regular events and meetings on campus with other faculty and/or supervisors such as field supervisor meetings and professional development events on campus for mentor teachers (e.g., co-teaching, edTPA seminars, orientations).
  • Assist the Director with facilitating and planning for professional development for mentor teachers and teacher candidates. 
  • Depending on enrollments and the overall needs of the program, in addition to expertise areas, this position may include additional support of our TCPs.

Other requirements of the job: Ability to regularly travel between UWT and school sites (UWT reimburses for mileage in accordance to program, University, and state policies).

The TCP is currently structured as a summer-start cohort model. In addition to coursework, high-quality placements with a cluster of partner districts who share our values are central to the success of our program. We currently offer three (3) certification options at the post-baccalaureate level in high-needs areas as follows: (a) dual-track K-8 Special Education, (b) dual-track K-8 Teaching English Language Learners, and (c) Secondary Mathematics and Science. We are currently in the process of launching an undergraduate program leading to teacher certification in autumn 2022.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university 
  • A minimum of 3 years of successful experience teaching in K-12 schools as a certified teacher. We prefer candidates from individuals who have content-area expertise in Secondary Mathematics or Science; Special Education; and/or Teaching English Language Learners.
  • A commitment to supporting the success of diverse teacher candidates, particularly individuals who have been underrepresented and underserved in K-12 and higher education.
  • Ability to (or willingness to learn) use basic technology including e-mail, Microsoft Office Suite tools, Learning Management Systems, and other online applications/tools.  
  • Evidence of a professional demeanor including the ability to maintain confidentiality and resolve conflict diplomatically. 
  • Ability to closely collaborate, communicate, and listen to colleagues, SoE leaders, mentor teachers, and school leaders to support the success of diverse teacher candidates.  
  • Ability to work independently and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner with little direction. 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education or related field
  • Knowledge of Washington State’s K-12 content-area standards and curricula
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and/or supporting practicing or pre-service teachers (e.g., instructional coach, school leader, TOSA, prior university experience as a supervisor, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) requirements as implemented in Washington State 
  • Experience teaching in the public schools in multicultural or urban settings
