The University of Washington Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHL) invites applications for one full-time Assistant Teaching Professor/Clinical Placement Coordinator position (non-tenure track) beginning in September 2021 (UW Job Class Code: 0115). This is a 50% teaching and 50% Clinical Placement Coordinator position with a nine-month service period during the academic year with an initial three-year appointment and is eligible for a multi-year re-appointment.  Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

The SNHL currently offers two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership (BAHL) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).  The BAHL prepares students from a range of professions and backgrounds for careers in leadership positions across a spectrum of healthcare settings, including healthcare organizations, government, and industry. The undergraduate nursing program is designed for learners who are registered nurses (RN) to attain their BSN degree.  This program emphasizes communication, critical thinking, equity and social justice, care across the lifespan, leadership, research, and scholarship toward improving health outcomes, population health, and adapting to changes in healthcare.

The school also offers a graduate degree, the Master of Nursing that prepares nurses with in-depth knowledge and skills as systems leaders in a range of practice settings.  Additionally, a Doctorate in Educational Leadership that includes a pathway for nurse educators is offered in collaboration with UWT’s School of Education.  Preliminary planning has begun for the development of a master’s degree in healthcare leadership, and a doctoral degree in nursing.

The Assistant Teaching Professor/Clinical Placement Coordinator is expected to teach across programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, developing, and evaluating clinical practicum/fieldwork sites consistent with school programs’ learning objectives.  This includes coordinating and maintaining student clinical/fieldwork site placements and facilitating effective student learning in clinical/fieldwork sites.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with adult students from socially minoritized and historically underrepresented populations, e.g., immigrants, gender identity/fluidity, race, culture, ethnicity.

The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate student clinical practicum/fieldwork placements.

The successful candidate will be expected to work and collaborate with community agencies/organizations.

The successful candidate will be expected to exercise organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively in writing and electronically and demonstrate effective presentation skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to work creatively and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.


  • Minimum of a graduate degree in nursing (e.g., Master’s or doctoral degree) from an accredited institution is required, or foreign equivalent.
  • Possess or eligible for an unencumbered RN license in Washington State.
  • At least three years’ experience as a RN.
  • The successful candidate will have experience with teaching that demonstrates cultural responsiveness to the needs of diverse and underrepresented groups and populations.
  • The successful candidate will have experience teaching in nursing education, nursing professional development, or related health professional education.
