Position Description

The School of Music at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle seeks a scholar of music history for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin September 16, 2021.  This position holds a nine-month (September 16-June 15) annual service term. The UW operates on the quarter system, with a teaching load consisting of one or two courses per quarter, depending on the type of classes and enrollment.  

The area of specialization sought is music of the 18th and 19th centuries, including instrumental music, in order to complement the research and teaching activities of the current academic and performing faculty of the School of Music.   Additionally, some teaching in music theory will be expected, ranging from non-major theory to upper-level courses in theory. 

The School of Music resides in the College of Arts & Sciences and enrolls over 200 students, divided between undergraduate and graduate programs.  Many students are pursuing degrees in performance; the program in music history offers the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. to a select group of students, all of whom receive full financial support at the graduate level.   For decades, students from the bachelors and masters programs have entered leading departments of musicology for Ph.D. work; the graduates of the music history program at the University of Washington enjoy distinguished careers in academe, as well as careers in publishing and in research libraries.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out a well-developed research agenda and teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, both music majors and other undergraduates.  It is expected that applicants will represent a broad array of approaches to the issues of repertory, composers, and trends, and will examine music within the context of larger themes of music history and the issues of diversity and inclusion.   As a research-intensive (R1) institution, the University of Washington requires and supports research through funding that is awarded through internal competitive processes.  The successful candidate will be expected to perform appropriate departmental and university service, to serve on graduate committees for academic and performance degrees, and to encourage diverse views of musical creativity and representation. 

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in musicology, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment. Experience in developing and teaching via an online platform for large non-major classes is required. 

The successful candidate’s portfolio will contain indications of national recognition at the early career stage, and will be expected to develop a research portfolio that will have a significant influence in the field of musicology
