The Libraries is an integral partner in the education, research, clinical care, and service mission of the University. The UW Tacoma Library engages in the full spectrum of scholarly and teaching activities for the University of Washington Tacoma campus. As such, the UW Tacoma Library plays an essential role in the learning, teaching, research, and community partnership work of the University through access, collections, consultations, digital scholarship support, events, instruction, reference, service, and technology. UW Tacoma librarians work in a matrixed model in which all librarians carry responsibility for a single area of library work, but also contribute to all areas of library. The University of Washington Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the UW Tacoma Library and Associate Dean of University Libraries. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape major programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives at one of the nation’s premier academic libraries.

Under the general direction of the Vice Provost for Digital Initiatives and Dean of University Libraries, the Director and Associate Dean are responsible for strategic visioning, policy and program development, operations and personnel, and overall innovation and excellence in the UW Tacoma Library. The Director and Associate Dean provide leadership for transformational and user-centered services; integrated educational and curricular programs; staff development at all levels; an inclusive environment that also prioritizes equity and diversity; responsive collections and information resources; assessment; and marketing of services. The Director and Associate Dean work closely with the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, UW Tacoma and other UW Tacoma administrative teams to accomplish these responsibilities, and to foster and maintain effective cross-campus communication and coordination. The Director and Associate Dean build strong collaborative leadership relationships across UW Tacoma and the University of Washington Libraries tri-campus environment.


· In consultation with the Vice Provost for Digital Initiatives and Dean of University Libraries, collaborate with UW Tacoma leadership in developing Library and campus-level strategic initiatives; ensure that Library decisions and operations are aligned with the campus strategic plan, multi-year enrollment growth, and student success initiatives.

· Work closely with UW Libraries senior leaders to ensure quality programs, services, and collections; actively contribute to the ongoing stewardship and strategic directions of the Libraries.

· Work collaboratively with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success, Assistant Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion, and other partners, to develop and sustain the Learning and Research Commons. Ensure student success is a priority for UW Tacoma Library planning and services.

· Work with library staff to build more equitable and inclusive programs, services, and spaces.

· Provide for ongoing assessment of UW Tacoma Library services to ensure they meet current and future institutional needs.

· Oversee a complex cost-effective library budget.

· Provide for continual skills and professional development of Library staff; cultivate leadership skills of staff; foster a sense of community and shared vision within the Library.

· Work with University of Washington Tacoma and University Libraries’ advancement to identify and develop resources to support programs to enhance the excellence of the UW Tacoma Library and the campus.

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year. Sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.


$90,000. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

2. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

3. At least five years of successful library experience including leadership experience in an academic library setting; proven track record of innovation and new program implementation; understanding of the multi-faceted roles of libraries in higher education and the broader community.

4. Excellent knowledge of current issues and opportunities for enhancing the role of libraries in research, teaching, and learning; experience in the provision of onsite, distributed, and digital services; understanding of current trends and changes in higher education; demonstrated understanding of the role of grants, fundraising, and donor relations in libraries.

5. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative management environment and to function effectively as a member of a strong leadership team; excellent interpersonal skills; engaged commitment to organization development and mentoring. High level of energy, creativity, and affinity for productive ambiguity; and ability to foster collaborative attitudes within the groups of units managed and between those units and units managed by others.

6. Experience and/or demonstrated interest in planning, construction, and/or renovation of libraries.

7. Familiarity with assessment and evaluation methods; creative, energetic, innovative, and motivated for on-going assessment of services, collections, and facilities.

8. Must be an articulate and engaging advocate and have entrepreneurial and superior communication skills. Ability to engender partnerships and represent both the University Libraries and the UW Tacoma Library in a variety of venues.

9. Record of research, publication, and professional contributions. Evidence of exemplary leadership and influence.
