Position Description

The University of Washington English Department invites applications for two non-tenure track positions at the rank of Acting Assistant Professor to teach and mentor in the Writing Programs. Acting Assistant Professors are one-year, full-time appointments, eligible for annual renewal for a maximum of four years. These positions will have an annual 9-month service period with a start date of September 16, 2020.

Candidates will teach five or six courses annually across the English Department’s two writing programs—the Expository Writing Program (EWP) and the Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP)—and in lieu of a sixth course will participate in administration and mentoring in the writing programs, which might include but is not limited to assisting with teaching preparation and orientations, curriculum development, graduate student mentoring, and program assessment. Courses taught will vary based on candidates’ expertise, interests, and program need, but might include first-year writing, multimodal and digital composition, technical and professional writing, STEM writing, business writing, public and community-based writing, upper division and special topics writing courses, or writing courses linked to disciplines across campus.  Candidates will have opportunities for professional development and training in writing pedagogy and administration.

The successful candidate will contribute to a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.  

Qualifications

We seek applicants with experience and interest in writing pedagogy from all fields of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in their field by the position start date. Successful candidates should demonstrate a record of innovative and effective college-level teaching of writing and student mentoring; a commitment to ongoing professional and scholarly development; and active participation in departmental, university, and professional service.

Additional preferred qualifications include: disciplinary writing expertise; expertise in writing pedagogy and theory; experience with teacher development, training, and mentoring; discipline-specific industry experience; significant administrative leadership; and/or program development experience.

Candidates must submit a letter of application, C.V., teaching portfolio (e.g., teaching philosophy, selected syllabi and assignments, course evaluations), and three confidential letters of recommendation. Applicants are encouraged to describe in their cover letter and demonstrate throughout their materials how their scholarship, teaching, service, administration, and/or mentoring contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
