Teaching Associate - Acupuncture Services

The University of Washington Department of Family Medicine seeks applicants for a part-time Teaching Associate for acupuncture services – outpatient position to join our faculty at the University of Washington Osher Center for Integrative Medicine.


Job Description

Duties and Essential Job Functions - out patient

The licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac) “Acupuncture Specialist” will provide acupuncture treatments and other related modalities singularly as well as part of a team of health care specialists working to promote health and wellbeing, healing and treat diseases by integrating methods within their scope of practice. Age of patient population: Over the age of 14 years old.



Acupuncture Care

Assess patient’s health status and plan, implements, monitors, and evaluates specialized acupuncture treatments for patients. Provides acupuncture according to UWMC standards of care, policies and procedures, as well as Washington State scope of practice for licensed acupuncturists.  Provides integrate acupuncture and other aspects of traditional East Asian medicine (excluding herbal medicine) with other forms of care to patients.

Coordination/Administration of Acupuncture care 

Documents care in patient medical record according to UWMC standards as well as guidelines established by Washington State. Participates as a member of patient care team whenever appropriate. Attends and contributes to team meetings, and other care coordination activities as applicable. Participates on multidisciplinary team, division, and department committees & projects as needed. 

Advances competence as practitioner

Maintains an active and in good standing status of acupuncture license in Washington State. Must be Board certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). Stays up to date with continuing education trainings based on UW Medical Center, Washington State, and NCCAOM requirements policies.


Complies with all policies and procedures of UW Medical Center, including but not limited to policies and procedures for confidentiality for patient protected health information (HIPAA) and other confidential information, safety and infection control.



Strong academic & applied background in Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine.

  • East Asian Medicine would include:
    • Traditional Chinese Medicine
    • Korean Acupuncture
    • Japanese Acupuncture
  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
  • Effective teaching skills as preceptor for clinical experience as well as teaching group classes.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Effective written and verbal communications skills with peers, patients/families, multidisciplinary team members.

  • Ability to counsel and educate others.
  • Ability to work productively with people who have both similar and different backgrounds
  • Organization skills and ability to accomplish work without direct daily supervision
  • Ability to solve problems & make decisions through critical thinking process.

Computer skills including the ability to learn and effectively use the computerized clinical information and documentation systems used at UW Medical Center and related clinics.



  • Successful completion of an approved acupuncture educational and training program (ACAOM or Washington approved schools),
  • Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) in Washington State
  • Active certification by the National Certification Organization for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine with ongoing maintenance of certification while working at UW.
  • At least 4 years of clinical experience (may be waived for candidates who demonstrate strong acupuncture knowledge and clinical skills)
  • Maintenance of continuing education: maintains an active license by meeting the requirements of Washington State and focuses professional development in areas relevant to job assignment and career goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate Acupuncture care based on individual needs for adult (older than 14 years of age).



  • Work experience in medical center and/or teaching hospital/clinic/center.
  • Experience teaching and supervising acupuncture students.
